Opinions

  • The author presents The Wolf as a character who takes pride in his deceitful actions, reflecting a lack of morality and respect for others.
  • The friends' reactions, filled with admiration and envy, suggest a shared value system that glorifies wealth and cunning, regardless of the means used to acquire them.
  • The story implies a critique of the selfish nature of some individuals in society who prioritize personal gain over the well-being of others

The Ferrari | Flash Fiction

A conman brags about a scheme in front of his friends. Where did the money come from?

Four men stand on the stairs to the clubhouse. A roaring engine rudely interrupted their conversation, like a lion announcing its presence.

They turn their heads and see a red Ferrari race up the private road so fast it makes the flowers next to the road perform a little dance. The red roaring lion speeds towards the round plaza in front of the clubhouse.

“Sh*t!” one man says, “That idiot is too fast!”

But at just the right moment, the driver hits the breaks and steers the car hard to the right, letting it drift on the asphalt. The red sports car stops almost perfectly at the foot of the stairs.

Under the foolishly gaping looks of the four, a man exits the Ferrari. He wears an expensive silk suit, golden cufflinks, and fine Italian leather shoes. But this is no lion; they call him The Wolf.

“Ah! Mr Wolf, it’s you,” one man says.

“Nice car,” another adds, “you must have closed quite the deal.”

“You remember that rich, old hag with the villa in the woods?”

The other men nod and mutter in acknowledgement.

“Well, I convinced her to invest in a fund for her granddaughter. Stupid brat runs a delicacies business. Wine and cake and some sh*t like that,” he says and laughs, running a hand through his perfect hair, “she won’t see much of the money, though, I guess.”

The four men laugh gleefully, equal parts greed, viciousness, and envy over their friend’s success.

“Did you already name your baby?”

“Sure, I call her my Red Riding Hood.”

After re-imagining Dracula (twice) and Alice, I wanted to have a go for the old Grimm fairytales. They already are pretty grim (Sorry for the pun. I had to do it.) but let’s see what we can do with them.
