National November Writing Month starts on Halloween night at Midnight wherever you are in the world. It is completely free to join and has been the catalyst for many people to write their way into a career.

The goal is to write 50,000 words in 30 days. It is a true marathon. I have participated in it for five years and have been a municipal liaison for four. This means I put together Write-Ins, pass out participation stickers, and meet other storytellers. In that time, I’ve learned that the urge to write starts in middle school and never abates.

It goes underground.

Resurfacing like a log submerged in a river during autumn. It is a primal thing like plants going dormant and putting energy into their roots; or even bears scavenging for every morsel to survive the winter. If this happens to you or someone you know. . .

Take heed.

Pull out the scrap end of a legal pad or composition notebook and start writing. The stories that unravel will astonish you. I did not know that I was meant to write memoirs or to write mystical science fiction about human devolution into their spirit animals. It has been a healing experience.

The hard work has been learning the craft of writing and it takes many years to learn the mechanics of story foundation. That’s why attending the Kick-Off, showing up at a write-in, or chatting with others on the various forums is so exciting.

You are not alone.

You meet people from all walks of life who share your same passion for storytelling. Every genre is welcome. Every gender is welcome. Every race is welcome. Every person is welcome!

Your imagination can heal —

Yourself and others. Art in any form is political. This is tough to accept and it’s okay if you don’t believe that — yet.

When you write past the 10K milestone and enter the heart of your story, something happens.

For me, I entered my version of universal consciousness. I had let personal disappointments take over my identity. Where was the girl who asked people, “Have you done your jumping today?” At five years old it was a daily practice and I highly recommend it if your knees can take it. If they can’t. . .

Close your eyes. Imagine yourself on a trampoline and Jump. . .

The Universe is waiting. . .
