The Essential Art of Releasing Fear
No one knows your inner world better than you do.
Throughout history, humankind has painstakingly evolved to seek favorable circumstances and to resist the unpleasant. With this etched into our origins, it’s completely understandable and natural to avoid situations that cause anxiety or distress.
Fear can thus serve as a protective mechanism, but if it is disruptive, it may be time to tune into these feelings in order to move past them.
The ability to seek out support and release apprehension is what defines whether or not we stay stuck in a fearful mindset.
It is difficult and uncomfortable to confront troublesome feelings, so go at your own pace and trust that you are exactly where you need to be. There is great solace in knowing that within the vast spectrum of deep emotions lies internal time-honored wisdom, an insightful culmination of hard-earned knowledge.
No one knows your inner-state better than you do.
Laboring in the lacunae of our mind, fear can quickly become a permanent fixture of the psyche, with tangled roots that manage to weave their way into our lives. This fear, while seemingly innocuous, creates a foundation that ensnares and prevents growth and ultimately limits the capacity for meaning.
So what do we do when these patterns threaten to envelop our being?
We acknowledge and get to know what we fear the most.
Being aware of what you fear and consciously confronting it presents a great opportunity to release old wounds and emerge stronger and wiser.
To do this, take an honest look at how fear affects your important relationships, personal successes, and perceived failures.
Through this lens of truth, we can recognize and calm our fear with the following questions: What causes the most fear and anxiety in our lives? What feelings, both mental and physical, result from this fearful state? Is this fear-based on rationality, or in falsehoods of the self?
Despite the tangled premise of fact vs. fiction, it’s important to give validation to our fears.
Begin with a conscious assessment of how you feel during moments of apprehension.
What specific physical and mental feelings indicate fear?
Maybe your throat tightens, your mind goes blank, or your heart starts to race.
None of these sensations are inherently “wrong.” Rather, they are guideposts that indicate the areas of your life that could benefit from increased awareness.
In effect, this is where releasing fear becomes a critical aspect of self-reflection and introspection.
Think of how your actions and thoughts can more easily reflect the truth of who you are.
Also, try brainstorming workable ways to acknowledge and understand your fears.
The relinquishment of fear requires that we notice patterns that provoke anxiety or bothersome thoughts that spiral into fear-based habits and behaviors. Confronting what we fear is a great way to deescalate and detach from those harmful emotions and their results.
Deciding to consciously release apprehension and fear gives us greater power over our lives and more sustainable serenity. Take heart in knowing that however deeply rooted our fears may be, they have no bearing on our capacity to release and flourish.
We are in this together.
With great love and gratitude, Aurora
