The End Of Lockdown Is Not Good For Everyone

Has paranoia taken over?

Yesterday on the 12th of April the sun came out in the UK in the form of the easing of lockdown. In my area of England, it was snowing heavily and the thought of sitting outside a pub nursing a glass of wine in a blizzard didn’t appeal too greatly. Anyway, needless to say, the snow stopped, the sun came out and the pubs opened. In fact, one pub in England opened at 00.01hrs on April 12th and by all accounts had customers outside enjoying a drink. People albeit with masks shopped till they dropped at non-essential stores. Gyms were open as well as hairdressers and barbershops. One barber in my local town had a queue that snaked around the block all eager to get their hair cut.

Yes, it's great to be getting back to some sort of normality and see people doing the ordinary things that previously we took for granted. But, and it's a big BUT, there are many who remain fearful, fearful of illness and Covid. Fearful of turning their faces to the sun. Online there are mutterings of “it’s too soon”, “look at those fools at the pub”, “there’ll be another lockdown”.

I’m part of an online group that is for COPD sufferers. I’m entrenched in there on behalf of my husband who has COPD. Many many of these people are terrified of the return to normal. They are still carrying on with shielding until they have their second vaccinations. Some have had to return to work as the clinically vulnerable had shielding status stopped on the 1st April and didn’t have the protection of the Government letter instructing them to shield and which could be produced to an employer to enable them to be excused from work and still keep their jobs.

And there are others, people who have forgotten how to socialize and now have extreme anxiety about going out and talking with people. This is apart from the fear of the virus itself. The other day I heard of a lady who is so anxious about walking past anybody outside she will actually step into the road to avoid them such that it has completely taken over her life.

Sadly I feel there is another Pandemic coming in the form of a huge mental health fallout from all of this. People have got to learn how to be people again. To join together in conversation, meet up and just be with others. These folk need to be helped back into the always flowing stream of life and not just standing on the bank watching it trickle by.

Make no mistake, Covid has killed many many hundreds of thousands worldwide, ruined families, and left many disabled with Long Covid. The virus is very real and has had devastating effects in every aspect of the modern world. Many countries are still suffering from soaring infection and death rates and there is probably more sadness to come.

So maybe as we step out blinking in the sun perhaps remember those who are still riddled with anxiety and fear and maybe want to hide away. We can all stay safe but join again with the stream of life and maybe help those still standing on the bank frightened to jump in with us.

Whatever we do, stay safe, stay well and be kind.
