The Eleventh Night of Hwoet
by Gustave Deresse
The sun set over the western hilltops, leaving the valley in ominous shadow. It was the eleventh night of Hwoet; the initiation of a new raccoon spy for the Owl Accord. This would be the final addition to the team until the following calendar.
“Bet, you know why you’re here,” stated a barred owl seated in the tree branches above, pearly black eyes reflecting moonlight, fixed on the young initiate. “Recite the pledge.”
Alone and surrounded, Bet felt desperately having made a mistake.
“I can’t,” he uttered timidly.
“You must.”
Bet hurried swiftly towards a convenient bush.
It wasn’t enough.
