The Elegance Of Simplicity
Most Expensive Isn’t Always The Best

Smart people know you don’t have to pay the highest price for the best product. It’s true. Look at the expensive luxury cars with poor reliability ratings. Have you ever bought an expensive item that you were excited about and had it perform poorly? Remember how disappointed and let down you were? Some people know how to look beyond the hype and recognize quality.
Price Doesn’t Determine Quality
Sometimes the most expensive is the best but only sometimes. When carmakers are ranked the same companies are always clustered at the top or near the top, Toyota, Honda, Mazda, and Subaru. These aren’t the most expensive car brands.
At the bottom of the list are the usual suspects, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Alfa Romeo — luxury cars. See price isn’t always an indicator of quality.
Learn What Quality Is
I had a supermarket manager friend who told an interesting story about his rich customers. He said he would set up displays of name-brand canned goods in the front of the store. He said the rich people would walk right past them and go directly to the back of the store and buy the generic canned goods on sale because the packaging was slightly damaged.
At the store, there are name brands and generic, which is better? You may buy the name brands because you think they are a name you can trust. But when you read the ingredients you may find the generic are just as good or better than the name brands at a lower price. Why pay extra for a label?
Do What Feels Best
Once I was working away from home and after work my friends and I were going out to dinner together. When I got off the elevator I saw everyone gathered in the hotel lobby. “How much did you pay for your watch? One of them asked as I was walking over to them. I looked at my watch and said, “I don’t know, $19 or $20. They laughed. One of the guys was showing them a $1000 wristwatch he had bought.
That’s okay. He felt good because he had an expensive luxury watch and I felt good because I had a $20 watch and $980 to invest. Sometimes spending a lot of money on something makes you feel good and it is worth it but, be aware, that there are better options.
Don’t Deprive Yourself
My wristwatch may be very inexpensive but it keeps time and has never needed repaired and I’ve had it for over 15 years. I saved money but I didn’t sacrifice quality or convenience. When you can identify quality you can spend less without getting less. You may just have to go without a prestigious label. If you are smart and secure that won’t be a problem. You will have the quiet satisfaction of knowing you are ahead in the game.
Satisfaction
If you are comfortable enough with yourself that you don’t have to keep up with everyone else and aren’t constantly trying to impress others you can do well. If you know quality and don’t care about status symbols you can streamline your spending and live better.
