The Ecstasy of Writing

When you have sex, many of you are looking for an orgasm and start the action of having sex. It is the same for writing, at least for me.

I have had some phrases or sentences — or even a whole of the scene or chapter if it’s a big novel — which I really wanted to write when I begin writing. I start writing towards the ecstasy peak. It is like; I am going to write this story because I want to write this particular phrase (or this sentence/chapter).

In other words, it is not that I love all of the sentences and paragraphs of my stories. My love towards the words and phrases are not even. I prefer some parts to it than others even if both of them are parts of the same story — sorry, my babies, I’m not a fair mum.

It is the writer’s climax in a sense, and it is not necessary the same as the climax of the story. Writing this part is the ecstasy of writing.

When I arrived at that high point, I finally reached the peak of feeling that it is time to write my ‘trance’! And, when I’m writing that part, I focus on writing so intensely that I can completely forget how much time I am spending.

It would be nice if the time that I can indulge myself in writing could last from the beginning to the end of writing, but it is not the case.

The other parts are existing to support the high point of the story. Otherwise, my readers could not follow the whole story. Honestly speaking, I even sometimes feel bored to write some parts of the story, despite knowing that it is necessary for the story — “I don’t feel like writing those minor parts.”

It is the same as a process in sexual intercourse. There are some acts which you do to make your partner happy even if it is not for your direct pleasure, aren’t there? Writers write for their pleasure, but at the same time, they want readers to enjoy too. So, it is almost the same thing.

By the way, sexual intercourse is something that involves at least two people because it contains the word ‘inter-’ which means ‘between’ or ‘among’ originated in Latin. You don’t often say ‘inter-xxx’ for something you do alone.

Some people say that writing is like masturbation. I can understand what they mean. However, I believe that popular writers have been pouring something more than self-consolation into their stories.
