The Dynamic Relationship between Humans and AI
Human-Centered Collaboration
Why are we always thinking about whether machines will replace human beings? This can never be possible. Machines need human beings to run them.
There is a talk about artificial intelligence (AI) and whether it will replace human beings.
What is your opinion?
In what way can they replace human beings? They can collaborate with human beings, and they can help human beings but they cannot replace them. Both of them have a role to play.
If we are talking about the work that machines can do and human beings cannot do we can say the machines are only helping human beings as things can be done faster through them.
We used to calculate manually and records used to take a long time. I remember when I did my PhD it was very difficult to calculate the data of 400 companies that were in my sample.
Today, we can put the numbers down and the machine will calculate it fast and give the result. This is a collaboration between human beings and machines and we can achieve a lot.
I had to visit people personally to get data from them. I also sat in libraries for a long time but today everything is found on the internet. The latest that is added is artificial intelligence to help people and not become a part of them.
How can AI write like a human being it does not have consciousness. It is like a rubber ball. You have to move it the way you want to but writers are becoming slaves to AI and taking the copied material and using it everywhere.
This makes it difficult for honest writers who want to shine by writing their own human stories and contributions.
Consciousness of Human Being / AI.
According to psychologist LeDoux, there are 4 basic varieties of life on earth. These are biological, neurobiological, cognitive, and conscious. Most living things are in the biological realm,
He also states that only human beings and those with biological functions can have consciousness and not AI
There has to be some element of consciousness to navigate and exercise control over new developments, that have potential and freedom of , expectations and actions.
To be human is to be able to reason and control one’s behavior and actions. You learn to be a witness, observing what you experience, and how you respond, and this comes from your sense of self.
Where does AI figure in all of this? LeDoux says only biological life can become conscious.
Dennett too says even if we artificially mimic biological attributes, the result will not endow the machine with intention or an agency with beliefs and desires. AI is not an intentional system that can make wilful choices.
To understand the potential indicators of consciousness in AI, an interdisciplinary approach is vital, so that all aspects of life and evolution are covered. Though some life forms other than humans are observed to have a certain degree of consciousness, it is doubtful if this is a possibility in AI, is what many scientists have concluded — but so far, the jury is still out on this.
The relevance of human beings and artificial intelligence (AI) is a complex and evolving topic that encompasses various dimensions including technological, societal, ethical, and philosophical aspects.
Here are some key points regarding the relevance of both:
Complementary capabilities: Human beings have unique cognitive abilities. They are creative, they have emotional intelligence, and a high degree of intuition. AI does not have these capabilities.
AI systems are mechanical as they help in tasks that require data processing and automation.
This brings about the synergy between humans and AI, and these are complementary strengths. Machines cannot work unless they are directed by the human mind.
Technology development: AI technology has been very useful in various sectors such as healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and transportation. They are useful in faster processing, greater efficiency, accuracy, and decision-making.
Ethical considerations: AI has created many discussions and ethical questions concerning privacy, security, bias, and accountability. These are questions which have to be discussed and developed and we have no answer to it yet, but we hope that human beings will consider and be rational about these issues.
What are the takeaways?
1️⃣It is expected that people may lose their jobs because AI will work faster and need fewer people. However, technicians, engineers, and technical hands will always be required to run these machines so it is possible that new job opportunities may come up, particularly in AI research and development.
2️⃣There will be collaboration between AI and human beings. They will not be competitors. When Google came and brought in information people were against it but now they find it useful and important as long as they don’t copy it. It should be used as a tool and not as a main function in performance.
3️⃣AI will become a super Google to give information on healthcare, education, and resources. It is already being used for surgeries and procedures in healthcare for heart, cancer, and other ailments. So its contribution cannot be undermined.
4️⃣The human mind will always be superior and if there is interdisciplinary collaboration and proper governance frameworks it will not have very high risk to humanity.
To wrap up
The relevance of human beings and AI will be collaborative as technology progress will continue. Solutions will come out over technological progress, ethical considerations, societal impacts, and collaborative work.
There has to be a balance between AI and human work being carried out. There are challenges but collective action and discussions will make it possible to make it collaborative and less risky.
