Summary

Irish actor Barry Keoghan, once banned from Cineworld on Parnell Street in Dublin for sneaking into movies, returned years later for the premiere of his Marvel film Eternals after achieving Hollywood stardom.

Abstract

Barry Keoghan, who has risen to fame in Hollywood, has a personal history with the Cineworld cinema in Dublin, where he was once prohibited from entering for evading ticket purchases during his youth. Despite his challenging beginnings, including time in foster care and the loss of his mother at a young age, Keoghan's acting career soared with notable roles in Love/Hate, '71, and Dunkirk. His journey came full circle when he attended the Irish premiere of Eternals at the very cinema that had once barred him. The event led to a humorous and nostalgic reunion with Rory Cashin, a journalist who had previously ejected him from the cinema and was now interviewing him for Joe.ie.

Opinions

  • The article presents Barry Keoghan's life story as a remarkable journey from a difficult childhood to Hollywood success.
  • The author seems to find humor and irony in the fact that Keoghan was once banned from the same cinema that later hosted the premiere of his blockbuster film.
  • The narrative suggests that both Keoghan and Cashin reflect on the past incident with amusement and a sense of closure, indicating a positive transformation in Keoghan's life.
  • The article implies that Dublin's close-knit community and the small-world nature of the city contributed to this full-circle moment for Keoghan.

The Dublin Cinema Barry Keoghan Was Barred From

Cineworld on Parnell Street Dublin has a pretty amazing story behind it. Believe it or not, Ireland’s new Hollywood superstar actor, Barry Keoghan, was once banned from its premises.

It’s well documented that the actor Barry Keoghan came from very humble beginnings: he spent his early years at 13 different foster homes, and his mother died from a drug-related illness when he was only 10 years old.

In his teens, Barry and his brother were living with his aunt and grandmother, as well as their cousin Gemma, who became their older ‘sister’.

However, during his teens, there was a mischievous side to Barry. In Cineworld on Parnell St, Barry and his friends would sneak into the cinema without paying. Eventually, the cinema staff banned him, and he and his friends were ordered to never darken their door ever again.

Fast forward a few years, and Barry’s acting career takes off like a jet rocket. 2013 saw him appear as Wayne in the Irish crime series Love/Hate. The Northern Ireland drama 71 put him on the radar of British filmmakers, and in 2017, he starred in Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic Dunkirk.

In 2021, Marvel came calling and he starred in Eternals. To promote this movie, there was an Irish premier. And this premier was held in none other than Cineworld on Parnell St. As you can imagine, Barry was a bit nervous about coming back.

In what was a perfect ‘small world’ moment (or that Dublin is a small city), the person who kicked Barry out of the cinema during his teenage years had gone on to become a journalist for the Irish entertainment site Joe.ie. So Rory Cashin and Barry Keoghan finally crossed paths once again during a press interview to promote the movie.

With the cameras rolling, Rory addresses the elephant in the room and says:

“Am I right in telling you we’re telling everyone the story of me kicking you out?”

Funnily enough, Barry was mates with Rory’s cousin Gary so they used the fact that Gary was his cousin as a way of pleading with him to let them back in. Barry said:

“I wasn’t going to say anything, but going through Cineworld last night, I remembered going there with with your cousin Gary, being like ‘Are you gonna let us in? This is your cousin and all!’ and you were just like ‘Nope, not getting in!’

“I was such a… pardon my French… but such a sh*thead back then. I used to try to bunk in and [you] would catch me. But it was nice to have the premiere there last night and be allowed in! The irony!”
