The Duality of Valentine’s Day

For some, the holiday is a wonderful reminder of their special someone, but for others, it can be a bleak reminder of what’s missing

DEAR VALENTINE’S DAY.

For years, you have been a constant presence in my life. You only happen once every 365 days, yet for some reason, I remember you even on the 364 days when you disappear.

There are mixed sentiments about Valentine’s Day from some people, but I won’t be shy.

Valentine’s Day has reminded me every year, without fail, of the parts of my life that haven’t gone so smoothly.

For that, I won’t say that I hate it, because without it let’s just say I would have made some questionable mistakes in life, but I wouldn’t mind if no one told me when it was.

In an ideal fantasy, the date of Valentine’s Day changes every year, unbeknownst to me when it’s happening. The cheerful couples, who have every right to celebrate their relationships and love for each other, are free to celebrate without me ever knowing. Those couples are free to live their life, and I can go about mine.

I have nothing against Valentine’s Day, it’s just one day every year that goes bumpier than others.

There’s not even a real meaning behind it-it’s a commercialized holiday and excuse for companies to make money off chocolate, cards that will be seen once and tucked away, and flowers, half of which will end up in garbage cans by the end of the day.

I would much rather agree to spend the day with my significant other, just enjoying each other’s company, than being pressured into a superficial holiday that’s effectively a money grab.

Sorry if that’s a bit morbid, but Valentine’s Day hasn’t really given me any reason to censor myself. It reminds me every year that when I wake up and look in the mirror on the 14th, no one’s there by my side. No one’s going to take my hand, no one to get lost in.

And that’s okay.

To all of the couples out there who are celebrating today, I truly wish you all the best and hope that your relationships are fruitful and healthy ones that will stand the test of time.

The only thing I ask is that you don’t let me know how you’re celebrating.

Till 2023, Valentine’s Day, farewell.
