The Dream and The Reality

Life is duty

Dream — Photo by guillaume loyaux on Unsplash

Dinner was over. I put the plates in the dishwasher and sat down to watch television. It was quite difficult to sleep. I began to surf the different channels.

The stars outside glazed the sky. Their twinkling made me feel contented and relaxed. Looking at them, I slumbered and soon went to sleep.

My Dream

I found myself in Wonderland. I started feeling like Alice, I saw the golden fountain splashing silver water and sparkling colors falling all over.

I heard beautiful soft music being played in the background and then couples dancing, Now I started feeling like Cinderella that a prince was coming to propose to me and take me out of the clutches of demons.

I started dancing and making merry and then I heard a loud sound of water running from a tap. My son called out “mummy, wake up! the tap is leaking”,

Dazed! Oh ho, how can the golden tap be leaking, I thought. Not possible! I rubbed my eyes, and I looked around.

Reality

There was indeed a leak in the bathroom tap and we were in a pool of water. I jumped up!

Still half asleep and in wonderland, my son said “mummy, please call the plumber,” only you have the phone number. The bedroom is getting flooded.

I hurriedly called the plumber. This was a reality. I was no longer in wonderland. In the world of reality, I had duties to do. Unless the activity is carried out properly we would be in a mess.

The plumber came soon but there was a lot of water that had seeped into the rooms. We had to hurriedly move the carpet and as much furniture that we could take out or everything would be ruined.

We brought empty buckets and filled the water from the floor and then we mopped the floor clean. This took us nearly two hours. We were all so tired but satisfied that we had done our best and saved a lot of stuff. We also cleared the water.

This small incident reminded me of the lecture that took place at our institute this morning.

A special guest lecture was held to influence our MBA students into their new fields of work mode. The speaker kept on saying the following:

“Dream big, The bigger the dreams, the higher will be your achievement levels”.

He asked the students about their dreams and kept rejecting them saying that the dreams were too small and to achieve greater heights they have to fly higher.

What is the relevance of my dream and major takeaways from this incident?

Takeaways

#1 A dream world is surely very beautiful, but the dream is wasted if it is not put into practice.

#2 If you keep on dreaming, there will only be want and wishes and no results. In order to get results, the action is very important.

#3 Dreams give relaxation and happiness to a person’s mind but it is a make-believe world, we have to ultimately contend with the real world.

Dreams have no value if they are left in the dreams state. Act and get results. Here are some suggestions:

#1. Prepare a good plan: Be meticulous in making a plan. The plan should be prepared for the long term and then broken into sub-periods and for the shorter-term with the framework of the long-term plan.

#2. Objectives of a plan: Your objectives of the plan should be clear and understandable. It must answer the question ‘What do I want to achieve’?

#3. The methodology of a plan: The strategy or path to achieve your plan should be clearly prepared. This will include the route that you will take to complete your programme.

The methodology includes where and when will you take breaks and how you will ultimately reach your destination. If you have any past experiences it will help to form a map of your future activities.

#4. Goals of the plan: The final destination where you have to arrive must be carefully laid down. You must set priorities for the short term and long term approach to reach your final goal.

To conclude, I would like to quote “I slept and dreamt life is beauty, I woke and found life is duty”

This quotation has been cited by different philosophers, poets and leaders. It is also my favourite quote to emphasize the importance and balance between dreams and reality.

Confucious and also by Louisa May Alcott and by Ellen Sturgis Hooper

_Rabindranath Tagore quoted, “ I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.”

All the quotations lead us over and again to the fact that dreams are good, full of beauty and joy. However, it is still a make-believe world. We have to create them, shape, and polish them to make them real.

A gem has to be polished to achieve the desired finish and beauty of the product. In a raw state, a gem is not valuable. Diamonds are expensive and have a lot of value but after they are mined, they go through several processes to make them valuable.

So I will finally say,

“Dream big fly high, like a bird, move on without fetters but shape and polish yourself to attain value and achieve greatness. Without toil and hard work, nothing great can be achieved”.
