The Downside Of Habits
There are 2 sides to everything
We are creatures of habits and habits define our lives. To live a good life, we want to adopt good habits. That’s why we are told to build good habits since childhood.
I used to follow this advice without thinking about it. However, I realized that sometimes habit also have their downsides.
I know it’s counterintuitive but I will explain it.
For example, I make chicken rice for lunch from Monday to Friday when I go to work. But I don’t do this on the weekends.
However, this Sunday when I woke up, I wanted to make breakfast. However, I put the rice in the pot and started making the rice. Then I realized that it was not a workday.
My habit of making rice almost every morning made me put rice in the pot instead of making breakfast.
That’s the downside of habits. Sometimes you stop thinking about what you need to do and you just follow the everyday process.
Sometimes habits hinder the growth
Once you form a good habit, you stop analyzing the process and you just follow the process. When you just follow the process, you don’t pay attention to what you are doing wrong in the process. Your habits stop you from analyzing the process.
I am not saying that you should not form good habits. You should definitely do it to live a good life.
But from time to time, also analyze how you are performing your habits. Pay attention to the process you are doing to perform the habits.
It’s important to scrutinize the process for continuous growth. You can’t just form the habit and stop thinking about it.
I would say revisit your habits after every 3 to 4 months and see what you can improve in your process.
There are downsides to everything and it’s important to take a step back and analyze the processes.
Don’t follow the habits blindly and analyze them from time to time.
