The Dos and Don’ts of Visiting Pompeii
A mindblowing experience that can be uncomfortable without proper planning
I took advantage of a recent trip to Naples to spend the day in Pompeii. It would have been unthinkable to be this close and not visit this world-renowned archeological site.
However, while the site itself was impressive, our experience there was less than enjoyable. Therefore, if you are planning on visiting Pompeii and want to be able to truly take in the incredible history of the place, here are some dos and don’ts.
Do wear comfortable shoes, and bring water and snacks
Pompeii is huge! That was definitely not something I had anticipated.
When it still stood, Pompeii was a fairly large city, home to about 20 thousand people. Not all of it has been unearthed but the site is still much larger than I thought it would be.
That means lots of walking.
The streets themselves are the original stone streets in some places and are uneven.
Therefore, I can’t recommend enough wearing comfortable shoes.
Also, while there are some water fountains around the site, there is nowhere to buy water, snacks, or anything else. It is important to come prepared, especially if visiting on a hot day.
Don’t visit when it’s 40°C
All the time we were in Italy, the weather was around 30°C every day. It was hot but we didn’t mind it.
On the day we chose to visit Pompeii, the temperature rose to 40°C. We rapidly regretted our decision to go.
There was very little shade around the site and we spent the day walking around, slowly melting in the sun. We had only one thought and it was to leave and find someplace cool.
That definitely tainted our experience in this truly incredible place. If you have any choice in the matter, try and visit on a cooler day. It will be that much more enjoyable.
Do get a guide
As I’ve mentioned above, Pompeii is huge. It is also poorly indicated and therefore fairly confusing to navigate.
When looking at ruins, it is sometimes difficult to understand what you are seeing and to picture what things used to look like previously. There are some panels explaining what notable buildings used to be. But, overall, there is very little guidance on the site itself.
When we visited, we used a guidebook to get some explanations and know what to see. Despite that, we got lost and wondered several times if we were really in the place our book was telling us to be.
I would recommend at least having a guidebook but the experience might be more enjoyable with a human guide. Someone that knows about the history and significance of the ruins you are seeing and is able to take you around the site without you having to look for landmarks.
At the entrance of the site, there are a number of people offering services as guides. However, it might be difficult to distinguish accreditated guides and to judge the quality of the tour. The best solution may be to book a tour in advance.
Don’t take the wrong train
If going to Pompeii from Naples by train, there are two options.
There is a train from Trenitalia that takes you from Napoli Centrale (the main train station in Naples) to the city of Pompei. That is the wrong train!
The Pompeii ruins are about half an hour of walking away from the train station in the center of the city of Pompei. That may not seem like much but when it is 40°C and you have a full day of walking ahead of you, it can be a lot.
Instead, the Circumvesuviana train takes you directly from Napoli Garibaldi (a different train station in Naples) to Pompei Scavi, which means ruins, and is the correct stop to get directly to the archeological site.
We noticed our mistake once we arrived in the city of Pompei and realized we had to walk for over half an hour. However, our mistake led us to have lunch at La Bettola del Gusto just across from the Pompei train station and it was an incredible meal.
Overall, Pompeii is a unique architectural site with incredible history. Seeing the body casts of people trying to flee or hide from the erupting volcano was a moving experience. And seeing the preserved relics of what life was like so long ago was unlike anything we had ever experienced before.
Despite that, we didn’t have a great experience. We had to walk for hours in incredibly hot weather without water because we had planned our trip poorly.
Hopefully, these tips prevent anyone else from having a similar experience as ours. Pompeii is a site that deserves to truly be enjoyed and appreciated.
