The Distraction of Complaining That No One Talks About

What to do when venting kills productivity

I’m a huge fan of true crime. A breaking story about a missing person can keep me busy sleuthing online for hours. Talk about a distraction.

When I worked outside of the home, complaining to my peers about work was my time-stealing hobby.

There are so many things that can distract us and take us off the path of productivity.

I used to go on for hours about what was wrong with my workplace, employees, and the messed up system.

What did I get out of all that complaining? Nothing. The whole squeaky wheels get the most grease thing only works if you’re squawking to the right people and are savvy with your words.

Belly aching to your peers doesn’t change anything. As they say, misery loves company, so there will always be others in the hive that feast on complaints.

Complaining is being dissatisfied. This dissatisfaction leads to constant complaining and toxic behaviors that form an environment of negativity. Negativity destroys productivity.

We don’t have to look far to find things to complain about. We can sit in our very own living room and pick out things that we want to change or make better and are frustrated with.

To become obsessed with the things we dislike is not healthy. Those inner thoughts can manifest in anger and bitterness. The type of bitterness that poisons relationships. When complaining prevents you from completing important tasks then you may have a problem.

For some people, it has become a hobby to complain about Medium. They complain about the platform and the quality of writers utilizing the platform. When you pen more articles complaining about Medium than on any other subject then complaining may have become a distraction for you. It is hindering you from writing the content you actually care about.

Awareness

The first step to solving a problem is to admit that there is a problem. Take stock of your daily activities.

Is a large chunk of your day spent venting or thinking about everything that is wrong?

Do you find a good portion of time that could have been productive was wasted due to complaining?

If complaining is preventing you from getting things done then it is a big problem.

Decide to Make A Change

Venting can be very cathartic. It is often a relief to get whatever that is bothering us out. The key is to let it out and move on. Staying in a perpetual state of venting can go from purging to pitiful if we’re not careful.

What is within your power to change the situation you are complaining about? Focusing on what you can do and taking actions to make those changes is the best way to move beyond complaining.

If you just come up with excuses as to why you can’t make things happen then you need to assess if you’re comfortable with the way things are. Maybe you prefer complaining because it takes up time. Now you have a lack of time as an excuse to put things off.

If you want to create a better situation then you have to decide on what you want and act on it. You have the power to decide. You have the power to change.

Practice Gratitude

I like to say that gratitude is the foundation of happiness. Just like we can always find something to complain about, we can always find things to be grateful for. When you find yourself start to complain, pause and focus on some things to be grateful for instead.

Make Solutions A Habit

For some, in order to find things that make us happy, we have to first acknowledge the things that make us miserable.

We can use complaints as brainstorming sessions. When we identify what’s wrong, it can help recognize solutions and seek ways to make things right.

Complaining uses a lot of energy. Put that energy to good use.

The Wrap Up

Unleashing your concerns about what you are dealing with in life is necessary for growing and healing. Like anything in life, moderation is the key. When the gripe fests become the norm and productivity suffer because of it then it is no longer healthy. We have too many distractions to let complaining become one of them. Stay alert, be grateful, and focus on solutions.
