Alright, so check this out — once upon a time in my teens I wanted to be a fashion designer or make-up artist. I could draw well, and at school design and technology and art were my thing in a major way. (Along with English, Spanish, and French of course.)

Fast forward, life took over and my dream never manifested in this direction. I went on to be a secondary school (high school) teacher, and let go of dreams of living the life of an artist.

That was until just before I had my son, I started to sew again, bought a sewing machine, re-learned how to read dressmaking patterns, and bonded with my mum over her talent and love for making clothes she had also when she was alive.

At the start of the pandemic around 2020, when we had serious lockdowns and social distancing, I started an online art course. Yes, you guessed it, my skill in drawing and painting came back, I’ve not stopped since. My partner loves to paint and so naturally we both fell into this hobby of drawing and water colour painting together.

For this week’s The Diarist entry writing prompt:

  • What’s a forgotten or hidden talent you have, or had at one point in your life? What’s the ‘story’ about this talent or skill?
  • Or what new talent would you like to develop, if you had all the time in the world?

Why did you stop using or working on any talent(s) you have, or had?

Have you thought of going back to your talent or skill?

How did you discover you had this talent or skill?

What makes someone talented in your view anyway?
