The Devastating Earthquake And Tsunami In Japan

It was ten years ago

So many lives were lost and ruined

Ten years ago on March 11, 2011, a terrible earthquake and tsunami hit the northeastern coast of Japan. More than 20,000 lives were lost, and the damage was beyond imagination. It was a huge natural disaster of gigantic proportions. Changes can come quickly to bring problems to life.

During that period of time, I was working as the National Executive Director/CEO of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), which is the oldest and largest Asian American civil and human rights organization in the United States. Since the ancestors of most of our members are from Japan and many of us have relatives living there, the JACL wanted to do something to help in a meaningful way.

I happened to be traveling from my office in Washington, D.C. to our JACL building in San Francisco at the time. Immediately upon learning about the disaster in Japan, we became involved. People were calling our JACL offices wondering how they could help.

A close friend of mine was also a friend of Thomas Tighe, the President and CEO of Direct Relief International, which is a premier humanitarian aid organization. Direct Relief’s mission as stated on their website is:

Direct Relief is a humanitarian aid organization, active in all 50 states and more than 80 countries, with a mission to improve the health and lives of people affected by poverty or emergencies — without regard to politics, religion, or ability to pay.

The JACL was able to partner with Direct Relief in their ongoing efforts to help the people of Japan. They already had large donors who stepped up, and the JACL was able to work with them to gain additional funds. The JACL also helped Direct Relief work with the people on the ground. The JACL has a Japan Chapter which was able to become involved in the relief efforts.

We were able to make several trips to visit Japan and witness the devastation first hand. It was heartbreaking to see and hear about the hardships caused by the tsunami. So many lives were lost, and people were impacted in terrible ways by losing their homes, businesses, family members and friends.

As we traveled to Japan at various times, we saw that they did make some progress. They had cleaned up many of the areas and had huge piles of debris where the devastation was severe.

The people of Japan have been resilient with the help of millions of people from around the world. They have made a lot of progress in the past ten years. They have tried to get back to normal after a huge natural disaster.

Cherry blossoms in Japan (Image is author’s)

As spring arrives in Japan, the cherry blossoms will bring new hope and light to the country. The blossoms are revered in Japan and are a sign of spring. The blossoms brought beauty after the earthquake and tsunami just as they do every year to bring happiness and joy to the people.

Now Japan is working to end the COVID-19 pandemic just as the rest of the world is doing. They remember the earthquake and tsunami with all the lives lost. The government and people of Japan have expressed gratitude to all those from around the world who came to their aid during their time of need.
