The Deafening Ears of Listeners

A Poem

Photo by Alex Blăjan on Unsplash

I speak and you hear It’s amazing how this doesn’t work That the words I speak are not the same words that you hear because I say that I am tired and you dismiss the face value of everything because you would rather define and investigate the nuance of being tired and shine its shadow onto a wall against the backdrop of your own personal experience only to decide that I wasn’t tired at all and that what I was really trying to say was that I had an inherent mistrust, a pain so deep inside that it broke me, and that tired was just an excuse for being an uncaring misanthrope Meanwhile, I was already asleep

The deafening ears of listeners are drowning out the truth in favor of a personal narrative created inside of an echo chamber of a very odd combination of self-loathing and overconfidence One that diagnoses and solves even the simplest of equations to mean something else That now 2 + 2 does not equal 4 because that assumes that both 2s are telling the truth and are not harboring resentment or acting like a 3 which would upend the formula and render the universe meaningless and/or it’s easier to say it doesn’t add up because that’s what suits you and it’s also why you can’t hear me

Bombastic words obliterate and obfuscate and then here comes someone to explain the obvious, to tell us that it was a joke and that even though the words, in and of themselves, seem like the definition of hate speech That, in fact, it was just poor humor aimed directly at someone already in the crosshairs Hahaha, it really is funny how words can come out and be so obvious as to their meaning and somehow, someway, someone can twist them into the last pretzel at Auntie Anne’s when they are out of dip

So many deaf ears that can hear just fine So many blind eyes that can see just fine So many “educated” people that are so misguided and a slew of megaphones all over the country open to put a bullhorn behind to amplify these words that we can not even hear no matter how loud they are typed IN ALL CAPS

I prefer my words cold like a glass of ice water on a hot summer day cooling me off from the inside and nothing more than what it purports to be Water blended with frozen water, inside of a glass, nothing more, nothing less and nor are my words more or less They just are and I’m sorry you can’t hear me, but I’ve been trying to tell you this for years that you’ve been listening with deafening ears
