The Day They Shut Off Niagara Falls
The basis for one of my favourite local urban legends.

A friend of mine knew a guy who said it happened to a girl in his hometown.
She was driving down some back country road at night, on the way home from her boyfriends house. A car was driving towards her without its lights on, so she flashed her high beams at it.
The car spun immediately threw its lights on, spun around, and chased her down.
He said they found the car but never did find the girl.
At their heart, urban legends are simply stories. Stories that have circulated so far for so long that they have taken on a reputation of being based in truth.
They almost always begin the same way, “A friend of mine knew a guy….”
Often there is an element of horror or humour. Some take on a fable quality — teaching a lesson though not necessarily one of moral basis.
In the example above, the lesson is for young girls to not go out alone.
In Niagara Falls, Canada — where I am from — there is an endless supply of urban legends.
These legends are humourous in nature and are passed down from generation to generation.
One of my favourites is the waterfall being shut off at night.
I knew a guy that had a friend who went to see Niagara Falls.
He was told that they shut off the waterfall around the same time as they roll up the sidewalks.
Can you believe they can shut off the waterfall AND roll up the sidewalks?
Crazy!
Obviously, it is ridiculous that sidewalks could be rolled up. However, this response is just one of many that a local may provide when asked what time the waterfall is shut off.
It is equally ridiculous that Niagara Falls — a naturally occurring wonder- could be shut off.
At least, on a regular basis.
Niagara Falls is really comprised of three waterfalls. The Horseshoe, American, and Bridal Veil listed from largest to smallest.
Once, in 1969, the American Falls actually was ‘shut off’ for one day.
In reality, the water was diverted over the larger Horseshoe Falls to allow the rock formations at the bottom of the American Falls to be studied.
One day.
One day since the formation of the falls over 12,000 years ago.
Now, decades later, we have an urban legend.
While urban legends may be rooted in some form of truth, they are truly elaborate stories embellished to mythological status.
What should be retained from them are the lessons they are meant to teach.
So what is the lesson of the Niagara Falls example above?
To me, it is to understand that Niagara Falls, the waterfall itself, is something to be truly a phenomenal natural wonder of the world.
Not something that can be shut off.
Until next time……………………………………..XO-JGF
