The day the Nigerian Government Taught us how to be Immortal

BBC news

The past few weeks have been quite crazy, not just for me but for the whole Nigeria, We got tired of police brutality in our country so we decided to carry out our protests to the streets and online with the hashtag #endsars particularly on twitter, it gained so much attention that even Jack Dorsey supported the movement by making an hashtag particularly for this movement.

The Protests gained so much attention that so many celebrities showed their support even when our government was silent, we’ve been oppressed for so long by people who were supposed to protect us, its heartbreaking. The sad thing was that even during these protests these people were still shooting at peaceful protesters.

I couldn't hit the streets to protest because of my job(I barely had anytime)but I showed my support with a couple of posts online, I didn't know it at the time but these events started to mess me up mentally, I wasn't motivated to work or do anything, I couldn't even write my daily posts on my twitter and LinkedIn.

The negative energy was getting to me but this was not all..

On the 20th of October 2020 at Lekki, Lagos, the most ridiculous thing happened…

The Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwoolu decided to put up a curfew abruptly at 4pm(he made this announcement at about noon and if youve heard anything about Lagos you'd know that its one of the biggest commercial cities in Africa).

If the fact above is true about Lagos, how do you expect citizens to get back to their homes before the start of the curfew? with all the traffic around town..

Some protesters refused to go home at the Lekki toll gate and continued with the movement.

The military arrived at the Lekki toll gate, the protesters responded by sitting down on the floor raising their flags singing our national anthem(this was to show that they were not a threat to society but they were only exercising their rights as citizens of the country)…

The military took out their guns and shot at the peaceful protesters…

it was a massacre, young people lost their lives.

Why?

They wanted to have better lives for themselves. That's why.

Do you know the worst part?

We wouldn't have even known what actually happened at the Lekki toll gate if one of the protesters(Dj Switch)didn't have her phone on Instagram live(the Nigerian government removed all the cameras just before the massacre)

I was angry, I couldn't believe it.

our own government sabotaged our protest.

As i write this to you, I'm smiling. “why the hell are you smiling Tobou, are you insane? ”don't worry I haven't gone mad…yet. I'm smiling because after decades of oppression and bad governance, the Nigerian youth has decided to take a stand.

The government thought that killing a couple of people would make us back down and run back to our shell but no, they were wrong when they killed those guys, they killed a part of us too and can you kill what's already dead? of course not. Those guys who lost their lives to the struggle continue to live in our hearts as we take giant strides to make Nigeria a better place for future generations.
