As a business analyst, when I heard about Mickey Mouse entering the public domain, I couldn’t overlook the potential business opportunities it might bring to the NFT world. Mickey Mouse, this classic cartoon character, has been one of Walt Disney’s most iconic and beloved creations since its debut in the milestone 1928 animated short film “Steamboat Willie.”

In fact, within five years after Mickey Mouse first appeared in “Steamboat Willie” in 1928, annual sales of Mickey-related products exceeded $1 million, which in today’s terms would equate to around $20 million. In 1947, a New York Times article reported that Disney’s annual sales exceeded $100 million, with Mickey Mouse being the best-selling product. At that time, Disney specifically launched radios, photo albums, and thermos flasks targeting adults, selling 600,000 Mickey Mouse watches that year, appealing to both children and adults.

In 2016, Disney’s global parks received over 140 million visitors, and by 2017, Disney’s market value exceeded $178 billion. In 2020, Disney’s merchandise licensing and retail revenue reached $5.2 billion.

Now, with the copyright of this animation set to expire in 2024, the first day has already seen creative endeavors and transactions related to Mickey Mouse in the NFT market. Some have created Mickey Mouse’s PFP, issuing 1927 NFTs featuring the original 1928 Mickey Mouse, with a trading volume reaching 120 eth on the day of launch. Additionally, there’s a cryptocurrency named $MICKEY coin. These initiatives aim to build a community of MICKEY enthusiasts, combining nostalgia, modern technology, and classic art elements around this public domain character, creating an entirely new business opportunity.
