The Day I Saw a UFO & Told No One

A True Story

The day I saw a UFO, I was driving from Dorset to Bath along some country lanes.

It was about 6 o’clock in the evening and the moon must have been quite full because the sky was visibly dark blue and clear. I was distracted by a light to my right. The light was in the sky and it was shining down like a search light. At first I thought this might be a helicopter, but it was in an odd place; right adjacent to the side of the road and above a random field.

I stared out ahead of me. The road I was driving on was clear. Empty. I decided to risk a good look to my right side at whatever it was. I talked myself into it. After all, I might be at risk. I felt quite disturbed by its presence, and it might be a threat to me or somebody else. I took a good long look at the apparition for a few seconds. It looked solid.

This was not a helicopter. There was something distinctly odd about the way it moved. It was moving up and down. If I expected anything to move up and down, it would be a UFO. That is how they are depicted in films. I wasn’t pleased. I was surprised. What was a UFO doing on a calm evening at the end of the summer, adjacent to a B road in Dorset? Why was it hovering, seemingly doing nothing that I could decipher?

I had to get another look. I was afraid that this object, which was by no means small, it was bigger than any child’s toy, it was probably the size of a helicopter, might be a threat, to me or somebody else. I waited until I had a relatively straight section of road. (I always drive with due care and attention.)

I took another look. Surprisingly, it was still there, just hovering at the side of me. It had one solitary, white light emanating from it which managed to blind any attempt that I made to work out the true shape of it. I began to wonder whether my mind was filling in the details, because I was convinced it was hexagonal. But the most eerie thing about it was this; it was completely silent. There was no familiar helicopter noise; there was no familiar aeroplane sound. Nothing. Just this huge, strange vehicle hovering in the sky.

My mind was whirring with possibilities. But I didn’t believe in UFOs, did I?

Naive art by Hermione Laake

“Finally, I reached civilisation; a pub.”

It is strange how something out of the ordinary can focus the mind. The mind becomes razor sharp and aware of everything in moments of intense fear.

I can still see the road that night, and I remember realising how devoid of life that road was; something I had never considered before. Until now. I felt completely alone.

As I drove along the thing remained where it was, haunting me with its solid presence.

Finally, I reached civilisation; a pub. Should I pull over and attempt another look from the car park? There would be people here that might protect me from an alien abduction. But no. I decided they would be strangers. I decided to remain within the comparative safety of my car and drive on.

After another 5 minutes, tall trees flanked both sides of the road and the road pulled away westward. My car followed the undulating road. I left the very unghostly apparition behind.

For days I was left with a strange feeling of uneasiness. Was I mistaken? Was this in fact a UFO hidden in plain sight? Was this some secret government reconnaissance trip? Why did I see this thing and nobody else? You decide.
