EGO RUN AMOK
The Dark Side of Community Theatre
Ode to the bruised ego of a minor character
The seats are empty but the room is full Of voices echoing across the stage But hark, my role is near invisible! And so I strut, and fret, and nurse my rage; They all have headshots! They can dance! So why Am I sad as melted, sidewalk ice cream? Now hush, don’t let them hear my jealous sigh Or reveal how I lust for fame, and scheme For followers, just like Kardashians — Until this play, I didn’t know my soul Was shallow as a pink Mercedes Benz! How could I have been so dang gullible To say, “Sure, I’ll take the smallest part” — Curse the stars, and damn my blackened heart!
