Summary

The provided text is a poetic critique of unbridled capitalism, which it personifies as a malevolent force that sows seeds of greed and exploitation, particularly affecting the poor and the unwary.

Abstract

The content presents a syllabic poem titled "The Dark Call of Greed," which metaphorically depicts capitalism as a sinister entity that operates under the cover of darkness, cursing any light that symbolizes hope or change. It emphasizes the destructive nature of insatiable greed, which manipulates the system to benefit a few at the expense of the many. The poem describes how this form of capitalism cheats the unsuspecting, casting humanity aside and treating people as mere commodities. The author, Robert G. Metivier, reflects on the potential of capitalism to be effective when executed with care, but warns of its transformation into an evil force when wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few, threatening the survival of the average person and the core of the human family. Metivier calls for a reformation of capitalism to serve humanity rather than enslave it.

Opinions

  • Capitalism, when manipulated, can lead to a concentration of wealth that prevents the average person from thriving.
  • The current state of capitalism is portrayed as having a life of its own, one that is destructive and must be addressed.
  • The author suggests that capitalism should be taught to serve humanity, implying a need for systemic change.
  • There is a stark contrast drawn between the few who manipulate the system and the many who are exploited by it.
  • The poem conveys a sense of urgency to reckon with the dark side of capitalism before it causes irreparable harm to society.

Crushing people with unbridled capitalism

Dark Calls to Night Curses Any light Breaking Into dawn New life Beginning Its enemy Driving it forward Wanton contempt For the innocent It sows its deadly seeds Gluttony, envy Insatiable greed Stealing what it does not earn Cheating unsuspecting The poor and the unwary Manipulating the system To ensure the right to be The king-pins of society Cost does not in the least concern it Casting humanity aside People simple chattel to consume And none of them could ever conceive it For most dare not think of greater things They eat their Raman noodles to make it Swim as fishes exhausted against the stream Hoping that dawn indeed will break today.

Capitalism, carefully considered and executed can be a very effective system. But when it is abused by the few and manipulated to concentrate all the wealth in so few that the average person cannot thrive, it becomes evil. It takes on a life of its own that must be reckoned with before it destroys the core of our human family. It must be taught to serve humanity, not to enslave us.
