The Dance In The Rain
Short story time.
She climbs up on the box to peer out the bars in her window. Staring at the shoes of the people as they rush by, always busy, never stopping.
No one knows she's there, watching, hoping for someone to see her frightened eyes. Her arms reach for the outside to catch a foot or trouser leg. She hears a rattling of the door, multiple locks being opened.
Jumping down, she moves to the tattered mattress and sits down. Her head bowed as he comes through the door.
‘Mia’ he barks, her head rises with her eyes tight shut. ‘open your eyes’. Mia opens her eyes, tears forming, threatening to pour down her face.
He throws a sandwich and a bottle of water at her. It is the most food she has had in the 6 months he has had her, the baby changing everything. Almost everything.
The doorbell shatters the silence, startling her captor ‘do not make a sound’ he hisses. Mia tries to listen to the muffled conversation and creeps closer to the door.
It’s open, isn’t it; she moves a step closer and feels a breeze from the gap. Dare she open the door and try to escape she can still hear the voices at the door.
Grabbing the door handle, she opens it wide, unsure of the layout. She had woken up in that cellar after taking a bottle of water from her Uber driver.
She tiptoes towards the voice, eyes adjusting to the light. As she gets nearer, she sees the person at the door has a uniform. She opens her mouth to scream nothing comes out. Panicked, she tries again, but nothing. Taking a deep breath, she opens her mouth.
The scream that fills the air is like a loud siren going off. Now started, she will never stop. He runs from the door, desperate to get her to shut up, the front door crashes open. The police burst in, dragging him to the ground and pulling her to safety.
They take her outside, looking up into the night sky, the heavens open. She starts laughing, dancing in the rain because she finally could.
