The Daily Life of a Lilly

Each day I pull off all the blooms on the Day Lillies. It seems like it should be wrong, to tear these blossoms off their stems and throw them away. On this day at least, these flowers are memorialized.

But this is why they are called Day Lillies. There will be a new batch, and maybe even more, tomorrow morning. Today’s flowers will be wilted and fall to the ground by morning. If you don’t pick the flowers off each evening, the new ones will get crowded out and there won’t be any flowers in a few days.

So I keep the plants healthy by tearing off the blooms each day. I get pollen on my shirt too.
