Summary

The website content explores the profound reasons behind individuals' attempts to set Guinness World Records, revealing that these feats often aim to support mental health awareness, showcase cultural heritage, and demonstrate resilience amidst adversity.

Abstract

The article "The Crying Man and Pulling Teeth" delves into the motivations behind pursuing Guinness World Records, initially perceived as a quest for fame. However, upon deeper examination, the author discovers that these attempts frequently serve higher purposes. For instance, Dmytro Hrunskyi towed six cars with his teeth to symbolize Ukrainian resilience during the war, and Nigerian comedian Tembu Ebere engaged in an extended crying session to highlight mental health issues. Similarly, Nigerian chef Hilda Baci cooked for over 100 hours to showcase her country's culinary diversity and address food shortages. The piece underscores that these record-breaking efforts are often driven by a desire to make a positive impact on communities and raise awareness of societal issues, rather than mere personal glory.

Opinions

  • The author initially viewed record-breaking attempts as frivolous pursuits for fame but came to appreciate the deeper, often altruistic, motivations behind them.
  • There is a recognition that some record attempts, like crying for an extended period or towing cars with teeth, can be dangerous and should not be imitated without caution.
  • The article suggests that the media may not always capture the full significance of these records, focusing on the sensational rather than the human stories and community impact.
  • The author emphasizes the importance of understanding the personal narratives and motivations of individuals who attempt to break world records.
  • The piece concludes with a call to be open-minded and look beyond the media hype to the meaningful reasons that drive people to undertake extraordinary, strange, or dangerous actions.

How I have come to understand why people want to break records

A struggling friend inspired Ebere’s mission to highlight mental health concerns.

I recently read about numerous individuals attempting to set a Guinness World Record.

When I started to write this, it was going to be a whimsical account of people doing ludicrous things to gain fame and attention. However, as I researched, I found that when I looked beyond, there was more to these records than what the media honed in on.

Some stories reveal acts of support, aiding friends with mental health challenges and showing the resilience of communities and even countries.

The Guinness Book Records’ inception traces back to a dispute in 1951 when Sir Hugh Beaver, the managing director of Guinness Brewery, sought a definitive answer regarding Europe’s fastest game bird, inspiring him to consider creating an authoritative reference book to settle such debates.

The Guinness Book Initially centred around biological differences, like longest finger nails of Lee Redmond (USA) whose nails measure a total of 8.65 m (28 ft 4.5 in); the longest nail is that on her right thumb, which alone is 90 cm (2 ft 11 in). But this has changed:

It now embraces creativity, endurance, and skill, often aiming to support causes, showcase countries, or raise awareness of societal issues.

People chase records for diverse reasons. While fame may drive some, others seek to conquer personal hurdles and leave a lasting impact globally.

Take, for instance, Dmytro Hrunskyi’s 2022 feat in Ukraine. He towed six cars with his teeth over 30 meters to demonstrate his people’s resilience and strength and raising awareness of Ukraine and the war.

Seriously, friends, do not try this at home.

In 2023, Tembu Ebere, a Nigerian comedian, pursued an emotional challenge: breaking the record for the most extended on-stop crying session. Initially, I was very doubtful, but on closer inspection, I found that Ebert’s mission was to highlight mental health concerns inspired by a struggling friend.

Ebere, who claims to be a comedian, promoted his efforts on TikTok and, under the username @237_towncryer, told followers: ‘Send me your problems I will be crying for you.’

Ebere, while speaking to the BBC, confirmed he was partially blind after he experienced “headaches, puffy eyes, and a swollen face.”

Note — while he did appear to break the record, the Guinness Book of Records did not recognise this attempt.

Again, dear friends, this is dangerous; do not try this at home. Try not to cry a river. Please!

A Nigerian chef, Hilda Baci, 2023. She set a Guinness World Record for the longest non-stop cooking marathon. She cooked for over 100 hours, She prepared various Nigerian dishes to showcase her country’s culinary heritage, address food shortages and support charities.

After ten minutes of prep, I am fed up! I need to hire this lady.

These stories signify more than mere records; they embody dedication, skill, and compassion, impacting communities positively.

So my perception has changed

Observing these feats on TikTok, I now grasp the pride and significance behind these endeavours. I now understand that personal narratives and their motivation. Even if some, like the crying and pulling of cars with teeth, are a little risky!

I now recognize the importance of acknowledging the human side — the why and the community-wide effects. When finding a voice where none existed before, these pursuits can send a strong message.

Each person’s story is unique, and their motivations are diverse. So from now on, I think I will be more open-minded and look beyond the media hype.

So, when witnessing extraordinary, strange or dangerous actions, ponder their reasons. You might discover something you really did not expect! But do not try some of these! They are dangerous.
