The Coronavirus In The Netherlands — Update 14 April 2020

Yesterday happened a few things! Here is another update with news from The Netherlands. Every morning I try to bring the news to you. I will follow the Coronavirus for you and the impact it has on our lives. Thanks for reading!

Three political parties from the left, GroenLinks, Socialist Party and Labor Party do not want a rent increase. Every year, there will be a rent increase on the 1st of July. but these three political parties ask for not doing this as there are people now wh are having difficulties with paying any bills during this Coronacirus crisis. The rent of social rental housing may increase by a maximum of 5.1 to 6.6 per cent from 1 July, depending on the tenant’s income. There is no maximum for homes in the private sector. The House of Representatives doesn’t feel anything to freeze the rent for social housing. “Sympathetic idea, but you don’t help the people who are really in a pinch,” says Jessica van Eijs of D66. She prefers to see customization. “That people who no longer have income, for example, do not have to pay the rent for a month.” Her VVD colleague Koerhuis also sees more in “targeted measures”.

Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus, normal health care is behind everything. Fenna Heyning, director of the Collaborating Top Clinical Hospitals (STZ), fears that after the Coronacrisis, healthcare personnel will have to make up for three months in arrears.

The profit of The Holland Casino is not going to the government as they usually are doing. As nobody is allowed to visit this casino, they aren’t making any profit at the moment. So, they aren’t giving their profit over 2020 to the government. That will a noose government of 68 million euros they could have invest in people in need. They decided it together with the Ministry of Finance.

Scientists warn for the risks when we are using apps to fight against the Coronavirus. Minister De Jonge announced the possibility of using apps against the Coronaviedus last week. There must be two apps that should be working on fighting against the Coronavirus: one of those apps should warn us if someone has been around with a person who was infected with the Coronavirus. Someone is then called to stay at home and keep in touch with a doctor with a second app. The scientist warns us about the state of the privacy of the citizens. When you are using apps to track us down, there is a chance your personal data would be going to third parties. “It is therefore important to take a critical look at the usefulness, necessity and effectiveness of such apps, as well as the social and legal impact,” the scientists write.

This is the letter.

The big giant Philips is going to increase their production. The company hopes 4000 more equipment to produce every week in the third quarter of this year. Also, the company is producing more respiratory equipment, an easier one. Philips is also introducing easier equipment which should produce 15.000 devices per week. These devices are for patients who are less critical. “The idea is that you can put less critical patients on ventilation,” said a spokesperson. “So that you relieve the pressure in intensive care.”, the spokesman continues. According to him, the system can also be used in intensive care. “Ultimately, it is up to a doctor to determine how it is used.” The new device will be called Philips Respironics E30.

Big cultural organisations — Rijksmuseum, the National Opera & Ballet and The Art museum — are writing an open letter to The House of Representatives. They are calling the national government to protect the cultural infrastructure with a ‘robust fund’. In this letter to the Minister of Culture — Van Engelshoven — and the councillors for the culture of the four main cities they are asking for financial support for short and longterm. “Cultural life may not return to ‘normal’ until 1 or 2 years from now, and then we assume that everything has changed,” the signatories write. The organizations also want the rent they pay to the (local) government to be temporarily suspended. In addition, they would like to see the working time reduction scheme, the Emergency Measure Bridging for Employment (NOW), being extended and that freelancers in the cultural sector will also be covered by that scheme.

Erasmus Medical Centre Rotterdam lost an employer. His colleagues formed a guard of honour for their deceased colleague.

Students get their public transport student card free for three months. That says the Ministery of Education.

In Oss, there was a Drive-thru for people want to test if they are having the Coronavirus. 75 people said they want to participate. “We do urge people to only sign up if they have actually had serious complaints associated with the Coronavirus,” the chairman of the foundation told Omroep Brabant.

Pinkpop is one of the biggest festivals in the world. But Minister De Jonge says that people shouldn't hope that the festival is going through. The festival is scheduled for 19, 20 and 21 June this year. De Jonge says: “We view this situation from day to day and from week to week.”
