It’s a Titanic Story. Who doesn’t love learning things about the Titanic?

So, it turns out that when Bob Ballard went in search of the Titanic, his primary mission wasn’t even searching for the Titanic. In fact he was actually commissioned by the US Navy to find the missing sub USS Scorpion, which was lost on 22 May 1968, with 99 crewmen.

The US Navy was concerned about the nuclear weapons/reactors on the sub and needed a cover story to do the search that wouldn’t spike the interest of the Russians.

This is about as Cold War as it gets.

What an amazing story, made even better by the fact that after locating the sub, Ballard was then free to follow his dream and try and find the Titanic, with the 12 day window he had left.

My imagination has exploded at how gripping and full of intrigue this story is.

In his interview on CNN today, Ballard also revealed that he has engaged in many other ocean-recovery missions that are still classified to this day!

Mind blown!
