Summary

A parent reflects on the challenges and rewards of homeschooling her three daughters during the school closures due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Abstract

The Coronavirus outbreak has led to the closure of schools, necessitating parents to take on the role of educators. Agnes Laurens, a writer from Bunnik, The Netherlands, shares her experience of homeschooling her three daughters. Despite initial fears and the difficulty of teaching subjects like math, she has found the experience rewarding, learning to be patient and flexible. The transition required adapting to a new schedule and balancing teaching with her job. While her daughters sometimes preferred to play, Agnes emphasized the importance of completing school assignments. As schools begin to reopen with a hybrid model, she acknowledges the ongoing challenge but also the joy of getting to know her daughters in a new capacity.

The Consequences of Closing Schools

The last few weeks I have been homeschooling my three daughters. You had to be at home since the Coronavirus outbreak.

The decision made quickly by the government when parents kept their children at home since the first infection was known. These parents were afraid their children will get the Coronavirus.

So, the government made the decision and closing all schools. As parents, you had to be flexible in your schedule when this decision was made in a quick amount of time. The teachers made a program in two days. That was such a work.

As a parent, I had to teach them suddenly. I was scared if I could do this. If I was capable of teaching them what they need to learn. So far, I have managed. I’m glad I did. I also learned a lot: being patient. Parents needed to be flexibility besides to their day job.

So, next to writing, I had to teach my daughters their school work. It was and still, it is challenging because I am not good at (basic) maths and some other subjects they were doing. I had to read their assignments a million times before I understood what my daughters had to do and help them to understand the assignment.

At the other side, I had put them into action to get (back) to work to do their assignments. Sometimes my daughters didn’t want to get to work on school projects. They’d rather play outside with friends, but they had to get back to work. I had to tell them every time that they have to get to work on their school assignments and not doing other things.

The consequences of closing schools are that parents had to change their schedule and teach their children. Also, parents had to deal with everything more than parenting, such as teaching their children at the same time. It is difficult sometimes, but for me, it was challenging as well. I loved this time. From Monday, our children are going back to school for half days, but they are still getting assignments to do at home with their parents. So, this is challenging too, but I also want to say that it is fun too as I know my daughters in another way.
