The Cons Of Hiring A Life Coach
Sometimes, they are good, but there are things to watch out for
A life coach is a type of wellness professional who helps people set goals and make progress to attain greater fulfillment in life. Life coaches typically help their clients with improving relationships, careers, and other aspects of day-to-day life. Unlike therapists or mental health professionals, life coaches cannot diagnose or treat mental disorders and do not need any formal qualifications or academic training.
There are many excellent and helpful life coaches, but there are also many who are not, as you can read lots of horror stories related to life coaches on sites like Reddit. However, if you are considering getting a life coach, it is essential to keep the following points in mind.
They Are Not Required To Have Formal Training Or Qualifications
This means that anyone can become a life coach, including those who are toxic, trying to scam you, or don’t know what they are doing. This can result in you wasting money, not making helpful changes to your lifestyle, or, worst-case scenario, causing more damage.
They Are Not Required To Follow Health Privacy Laws
Therapists and other mental health professionals are required by law to follow ethical codes, including the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA). Its privacy rules help protect your personal health information. Because life coaches do not have to adhere to this law, nothing is confidential, meaning they can share your personal information with anyone.
They May Try To Turn Your Life Into Theirs
Ideally, a life coach is supposed to listen to your personal goals and give you advice on how to achieve them. However, sometimes they may consciously or unconsciously project their own feelings and wind up giving you advice and actions that suit their life instead of yours.
A warning sign is a life coach that makes their life seem perfect and something that you should aspire to.
A Short Cautionary Tale
Although this personal experience I had with a life coach is extremely benign, I still think it is worth sharing as a warning. Someone I knew who happened to be a life coach promised to call me at a specific time but never ended up calling. I then messaged this person and asked why he never called me when he said he was going to, and he then told me that he forgot about the phone call and was hanging out with his friends.
One of the things that life coaches help people with is prioritizing and making commitments. If you see a life coach unable to follow their own advice, you should definitely think twice about hiring them.
I would like to clarify that I am not trying to bash life coaches, as many are well-intentioned and genuinely help people. However, not all are trustworthy, and some can do more harm than good.
