Did you ever read a book in your youth that left an unforgettable mark on you? For me — one such book was “The Coming Plague” by Laurie Garrett.
As a young teenager, I have vague memories of a time when the world felt like it was in constant turmoil, with significant global changes unfolding. On one hand, there was a sense of hope and optimism with the events leading up to the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the release of Nelson Mandela from prison. On the other hand, there were also growing concerns about emerging infectious diseases, such as HIV, Ebola, and bird flu to name a few that were causing widespread anxiety, the complexities of the Gulf War, and then there were the as-yet-unknown consequences of the rapid rise of the internet.
Amid this complex series of events, the book, “The Coming Plague” emerged as a guiding light, offering insights and knowledge to help us navigate the challenges of infectious diseases in a changing world.
The work of science journalist Laurie Garrett, who skillfully blends science journalism with captivating storytelling. Garrett takes us on a deep dive into the origins and repercussions of emerging diseases, illustrating how our actions, the environment, and the spread of illness are all intricately linked. Through compelling narratives and relatable examples, she encourages us to ponder the interconnectedness of everything. It’s like embarking on an exhilarating adventure through the world of infectious diseases!
One chapter explores the emergence of HIV/AIDS and its profound impact on global health. We delve into the story of Gaëtan Dugas, the French-Canadian flight attendant who inadvertently gained notoriety as “Patient Zero.” However, it’s important to note that since the book’s initial publication, new information and further analysis have clarified that Dugas may have been one of the first individuals diagnosed with HIV, but he was not the actual patient zero. Nevertheless, much of what Garrett reveals about how Dugas contributed to the virus’s spread remains compelling and underscores the significance of comprehending disease transmission. It also emphasizes the ongoing research aimed at adding accurate information to combat these diseases effectively.
I remembered another thought-provoking chapter in which Garrett explores influenza, which has become especially relevant in light of recent events with COVID-19. It’s fascinating to delve into the global repercussions of the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, which infected millions and claimed countless lives worldwide. Through historical accounts and scientific analysis, the author emphasizes the critical need for preparedness and global cooperation to prevent and address future flu outbreaks.
Just a few weeks ago, with a teenager of my own, I found myself contemplating the enduring challenges posed by the recent COVID pandemic and broader global health issues. Reflecting on Garrett’s insights, I couldn’t help but be astounded by how pertinent they remain even today. While we’ve made significant strides in understanding and treating infectious diseases, there are many timeless lessons presented in the book that are worth revisiting.
Despite being published more than 30 years ago, this book’s ideas remain as relevant as ever. If you have an interest in science and global issues, I wholeheartedly recommend giving it a read. It’s nothing short of mind-blowing!
So — dear reader — have you come across a book from your youth that has called upon you to revisit its pages? Do share your thoughts!
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
