The Colors We All Are Dying From Each and Every Day
The risks we face eating the most eye-pleasing of dishes
FOOD COLORING
Food coloring is considered any dye that imparts color when added to food or drink.
The dye can come in many forms including liquids, powders, gels, and pastes.
Its origins date back as early as 1500 BC.
This date marks the time period where trade became a normal means of survival in early Egyptian cities.
The purpose then was to make your product more attractive, appealing, or appetizing and therefore more lucrative.
Thousands of years later the motivation behind food coloring remains the same.
The only difference now is we are aware of the dangers caused by the inclusion of these dyes in our food.
CANCER-CAUSING FOOD DYES
The most common food dyes we ingest today are known by the FDA to be contaminated with carcinogens.
The FDA claims these dyes are only being used at “safe” levels.
The different forms of cancers these dyes are linked to are numerous. I list the specific colors paired with relative cancer at the bottom of this article.
HARMFUL EFFECTS ON CHILDREN
If you are a parent like myself you may sometimes ponder the reasons behind your child’s behavior at times.
Now we know some behaviors in children can be triggered by a variety of different food colorings.
These behaviors include hyperactivity, hypersensitivity, and attention-related disorders.
OTHER NEGATIVE IMPACTS
If these dyes possibly being tied to cancer and frowned upon traits in our children wasn’t enough to deter you from avoiding them, let me expand on the dangers.
- Deterioration of liver and other vital organs
- Interference with our digestive enzymes
- Increases intestinal permeability
- Linked to asthma and bronchitis
- Negative impact on nerve cell development
SPECIFIC DYES AND CANCERS
- Citrus Red 2 has been linked to bladder tumors
- Red 3 may cause thyroid tumors
- Blue 2 may result in both brain and bladder tumors
- Red 40 could lead to reticuloendothelial
- Yellow 6 adrenal and testicular tumors could form
*Red 3 was found to be an animal carcinogen in 1990 but is still found in our food today.
BE AWARE
Highly processed foods are usually at the root of these artificial food dyes.
These foods have few natural nutrients, are high in calories and added sugars.
Everything we put in our bodies directly affects our cells, in turn, this affects our overall well-being.
Food dyes are more likely than not to be detrimental to your health.
To avoid these dyes you can eat unprocessed foods.
Look at food labels to identify food dyes in the ingredients list.
Stay aware of what's been added to your dinner tonight!
