The Cleansing Power of a Shower
Physically, Mentally, Emotionally

On some of the hardest days, a shower can be a welcoming cleanse. Not only physically after a bout of physical activity, but also mentally and emotionally.
A soak in the shower, the warm streams gliding over your aching body, can ease your anxiety, clear your mind, and provide a refuge for deep thought.
A shower has the power to cleanse us from the inside out, ridding our minds and hearts of negative thoughts and actions — if we allow it to.
On many occasions, I find myself in the shower for longer than I expected, usually because I am deep in thought and going over a scenario or two in my head numerous times. At times, I’m calming my frustrated nerves and looking for the right words before I respond to something that upset said nerves.
Sometimes it’s quite the opposite, and I’m lost in blissful thoughts of love, counting my lucky stars for the people I have in my life, for my job, for my health. After all, a shower can make clear things previously unnoticed, giving us a chance to be thankful for what was there all along.
Have you ever taken a moment to sit on the porch during a calm rainstorm? In the beginning, we feel trapped inside, we worry about the car we just washed now being rained on or the plans we’ve had to cancel as a result. But just pausing to sit and watch and listen, is a powerful moment. The scent of rain filling the air, the soft sound of rain falling around us, the beautiful sight of green grass made that much more beautiful as it’s accentuated by the rain… and of course, the rainbow that graces the skies with all its beauty.
This morning, I stood in the shower, telling myself, “just a few more minutes, I have to log on soon for work.” I thought about a discussion my partner and I had before the shower and the way it made me feel. I revisited the points and rebuttals we each made, exploring better ways to respond in the future, and calming myself from the frustration I was feeling. And then, as my body and mind began to relax, my thoughts were increasingly filled with reminders of just how much I love him, how good he is to me, and how much I look forward to a lifetime with him.
The stresses and concerns softened into the background. What seemed at the moment like such a frustrating conversation was, in reality, not that big of a deal. I needed that moment to soak and be cleansed to put things rightly in perspective.
Showers also reveal the beauty trapped beneath the cold, dirty existence of the world and within our hearts and minds. If only we stop to take a moment to be cleansed and pay attention, a shower has the power to change our perspective.
If you ever find yourself in a dirty state, whether it be physically, emotionally, or mentally, try enjoying a shower. You just might find the clarity you need once all the muck has been washed away.
