The City

I find myself in a city I do not know
Uniform skyscrapers tower overhead and neon lights glow
A modern metropolis stands before me
An alien capital that I had no desire to see
I have a sense of foreboding that something is wrong
An intuitive feeling that I do not belong
I see swarms of people but no faces
They go about their lives in the usual paces
I am knocked from my bewilderment by a sudden explosion
Surrounding buildings are showered with rubble as they bear the erosion
I soar into the sky like a bird
I have a god-like view of the cityscape as I witness the commotion heard
Unparalleled destruction reigns in the distance
Something ominous and opaque is obliterating the city without resistance
Why is everyone oblivious to what’s happening just a few blocks away?
Am I a merely an observer of this dystopian decay?
I sense an imminent threat approaching
A cataclysmic event, altering the foundations of my newfound reality, is encroaching
Suddenly I am back on land as I’m met by an alluring stranger
She offers me a reassuring smile as though she’s aware of the danger
What does she see when she peers into me?
For stability, I anchor invisible roots around her like a water-starved tree
She holds the secrets to this realm
On a voyage through stormy seas, she valiantly takes her place at the helm
She grabs my hand and I submit to her will
I grasp for a hidden meaning I’m yet to distil
We ascend a never-ending rickety staircase behind a bland brick tower block
We rise so high that I can feel the entire structure rock
I dare to peer over the railing to where falling rain drops
A zigzag of tarmac city streets, traffic lights and building tops
The escalating devastation below seems to encircle us
I feel like an emotionally vacant passenger on a city bus
She unlocks a door, we pass through and shut out the gloom
I venture bravely forth in this transitory world where any wrong step could prove my doom
In a candlelit room, we now stand
We have departed from the ambiguity of a world unplanned
Black mahogany furnishings and violet painted walls
The chemistry is electric but for some reason she stalls
We seem to have a stimulating conversation, but I cannot recall what’s said
I desire to know everything about her, the dreams that manifest inside her head
Who is this mysterious beauty?
We linger restlessly as we resist the urge to retrieve carnal booty
Words fail us and we can wait no longer
We seize each other as our lust grows stronger
Locked in passion, we stumble to a bedroom in a steamy haze
We tear off each other’s clothes in a sex-infused craze
A bounty of smooth, coffee-coloured skin
A clamber of limbs and a nostalgic wondering of what could’ve been
A series of tender touches and electric shocks
Our fingertips are the keys to prise open rusted locks
Suddenly the room shakes violently, and we are in the midst of passion no more
Metal framed portraits and bits of furniture crash to the floor
We are in the eye of the apocalyptic storm
The room spins and disintegrates as my imaginings begins to lose form
The climactic moment is stolen from us, and the ordeal feels heartily unfair
In the delirium, nostalgic popular music fills the air
A curled fist hammers noisily on the apartment door
Unsatisfied, the intruder starts with the buzzer and batters the door some more
My saviour has become my responsibility as she buries her head in the bed cover
She evaporates into thin air and ceases to be my lover
Deserted, I feel like a vile rodent crawling around somewhere strange and squalid
My ears begin to sting like icy skin that has been struck by something solid
Drenched in sweat, I wake with a jerk
It’s six in the morning and I have to get up for work
I groan and thump the alarm clock that vibrates obtrusively on my bedside table
It’s time to play my part in this dimension until I’m no longer able
