“Life” is a four-letter word that has a really deep meaning. This four-letter word has so many ups and downs.

The simple definition of life is, the quality that people, animals or plants have when they are not dead. It’s all about quality not quantity.

Living things have a life. Life is all about our existence. No existence, no life. Life in itself has no meaning. It’s we who bring meaning to life. Everyone is here to fulfill different purposes in life. All of us give a new and fresh meaning to life.

“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.” – John Lennon

Survival is not the only purpose of life. We are not only here to survive. We are here to do some more and gain some more.

Today when I reflect back on life, what I can see is that life is a circle. Circle of past, present, and future. We all are roaming in this circle of life. Some of us are in past, always thinking about why did it happen. Can’t we just change what happened? Some of us are living in the future, making plans and thinking what will happen when I will have this and that? Some of us are living in present but always staying with the stress and depression.

Earlier, I was a person who never lived in present. I regret it till now. I was a person who either tensed about the past or worried about the future.

Sometimes, we became like this because we hate our present life but we are unaware of it. We somehow give ourselves the wrong hope of a better future and that future will never come.

Why do you need to stop living in past

I agree that the past has a great influence on our lives and it shapes who we are. No matter how hard we try we can never erase or change our past, it’s the truth that happened. Focusing on the past too much will only lead your life to destruction.

By staying in the past, you some way or the other harm yourself. It robes you the opportunity to be happy and live in the present. Don’t lose yourself in the misery of yesterday.

Disadvantages of staying in past

  • You become more anxious
  • It will make you stuck in life
  • You start feeling that life is worthless
  • It causes discontentment

Remember, you can’t move forward until you let go of something. You have to let go of the past to live in present.

If you want to fly on the sky, you need to leave the earth. If you want to move forward, you need to let go the past that drags you down.

Why don’t need to always worry about the future?

I was a person who was constantly worried about the future. No one knows what the future holds, but still, we think too much about the future.

I learned it hard way that worrying about the future is pointless. No matter how hard you try, you can not control the future. So, it’s better not to worry about it. It’s hard to deal with the uncertainty, but you have to do it because neither you can predict the future nor you can control it.

Disadvantages of worrying about past

  • You can’t be happy at the moment
  • It increases the stress and anxiety
  • It makes you an overthinker
  • It makes you restless

“Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow. It empties today of its strength.”

- Corrie Ten Boom

Remember, it’s okay to plan for the future, but it’s not okay to live in the future.

Why stay in the present moment?

The moment is precious. Sometimes, we take moments for granted. Every moment of life is worth living. So, why waste it thinking about the past and future when the present moment is going away from our hands.

Being present in the moment means that we are aware and mindful of what is happening at this very moment. Knowing and acknowledging the moment is an important thing to stay in the present.

I have a question, tell me the last time when you stay in the moment and enjoyed it to the fullest?

In addition to that, if you are living in present and constantly comparing your life with others then I have to tell you that this is not going to make you happy and successful. Comparing yourself to others will only bring anxiety and tension to your life.

There is only one reason why you live in past or worry about the future.

The reason is you don’t like your present life and you want to change it.

Therefore, if it is hard for you to stay in the moment. So, the best solution is to work on yourself and change your life.

If you just daydream about what your future life will look like then believe me it is not going to change. You have to work if you want to change your life.

Success comes with hard work, determination, and discipline.

5 ways to stay in the present

Be grateful for everyday life

Gratitude is the key to living a happy and healthy life. Gratitude helps you to stay in the present. Keep a gratitude journal and write tiny things about life that you are grateful for.

Stop worrying

You can’t appreciate life if you are constantly worrying about the past and future. Don’t worry too much about life and appreciate each moment.

Practice mindfulness

Mindfulness is a great way to stay in the present. Take a moment and start deep breathing. With mindfulness, you can also practice yoga and mindful meditation.

Focus on the important things

We don’t have any control over the past and present. What you can control is the present moment.

Set yourself free

It is important to set yourself free sometimes. Be carefree and enjoy the moment. Make a promise to yourself to be in the moment and enjoy every day.

Takeaway

I believe that if I set myself carefree from the burden of the past and the tension of the future, I was able to learn more about life and live life to the fullest.

Be in the present because it helps to deal with the pain and lets you live a happy and healthy life.

I would like to ask you all,

How would your life be different if you stopped living so much in the past and/or worrying so much about the future?
