Today Julia A. Keirns would like you to “write about apples. It can be a story, a poem, a recipe or whatever comes to mind.”

My Hubby’s Apple Pie

I love apples for a snack, but when I think of apples I think of my husband’s absolutely delicious apple pie and my favorite apple cake he makes for my birthday.

My husband and his elderly aunt put together this recipe, as it is based on their grandmother’s recipe they both loved. This recipe includes the 8", 9" and 10" baking pans. He always Granny Smith green apples for baking, which are peeled and thinly sliced.

Apple Pie Ingredients Per Size

Ingredients For 10", 9" or 8" Pie

Sugar — -1 cup — - ¾ — -1/2

Flour — - 3/4 cup — - ½ cup — - ⅓ cup

Nutmeg — - 1 teas. — - ½ teas. — - ¼ teas.

Cinnamon — - 1 ½ teas. — - 1 teas. — - ½ teas.

Dash of salt

Apples-(heaping cups) —- 8 cups — - 6 cups — - 5 cups

Butter or margarine — - 6 tbsp. — - 3 tbsp. — - 2 tbsp.

I use store bought pie crust, but you can make your own recipe.

Combine first 5 ingredients, then fold in apples until they are thoroughly coated.

Place pie crust in the bottom of the pie pan. Smooth out the air pockets. Once the Pie crust is in place add the apple mixture, making sure it is evenly distributed. Next place the top crust on. Be sure to place vent holes in the crust by using slits or a fork.

Next, my grandmother would smile and say “I know I am not supposed to do this, but I am going to do it anyway”. Coat the top crust with butter or margarine. Then, Sprinkle the extra sugar and cinnamon on top. Cover the outer rim of the pie with aluminum foil to prevent burning.

Preheat the oven to 425°F, and bake the pie for 40 to 50 minutes. Be sure to remove the foil for the last 10 to 15 minutes of baking.

Enjoy this delicious pie! My husband baked one for our new neighbors across the street which began a wonderful friendship.
