Summary

The Capitol insurrection on January 6, 2021, resulted in $1.5 million in damages, with discussions ongoing about the legal consequences for the rioters.

Abstract

On January 6, 2021, during the certification of Joe Biden's presidential election, a rally for Donald Trump escalated into a violent insurrection at the Capitol. Trump's supporters, believing the election was stolen, stormed the building, causing extensive damage and engaging in criminal activity. Despite Trump's earlier rhetoric about punishing those who damage government property, it was his own supporters who were responsible for the destruction. The Justice Department has since quantified the damages at $1.5 million and is considering restitution from those involved. While over 400 individuals have been arrested, the potential sentences and restitution amounts are still being determined.

Opinions

  • The article suggests that Trump's supporters were misled by his claims of a stolen election, leading to their criminal acts.
  • Trump is portrayed as hypocritical, having previously condemned riots and vandalism of government property, yet his rhetoric is seen as inciting the Capitol insurrection.
  • There is an implication that Trump did not support his followers as he did not join them at the Capitol as promised.
  • The Justice Department's stance on restitution is presented as a necessary step towards accountability for the damages caused by the rioters.
  • The article hints at a potential discrepancy between the maximum possible prison sentence for the crimes committed and the actual sentences that may be handed down.

Will anyone pay for causing the destruction?

The peaceful Capitol turned into a war zone

Thousands of people attended a rally for Donald Trump on January 6, 2021, with hundreds becoming criminals in the process. As Congress was certifying the election of Joe Biden as President of the United States, Trump asked his supporters to march to the Capitol.

Although he said he would be right there with them, Trump retreated to a safe area and watched the happenings on television with his family.

The people who stormed the Capitol were Republican followers of Trump who thought they were doing the bidding of Trump. They believed his words that the election was stolen from him. The MAGA people followed their disgraced leader. They did criminal acts of unlawfully invading a government building.

Trump had previously made comments about riots that had taken place in Portland, Oregon. He claimed that any perpetrators who were found defacing government buildings in the future would be prosecuted and spend ten years in prison. He obviously did not expect them to be his supporters. He expected members of the Black Lives Matter Movement to be at fault.

Jan Wolfe wrote an article in Reuters on June 3, 2021, about the damage caused at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Here is a little of that article:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Federal prosecutors on Wednesday said the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol caused $1.5 million in damages and indicated that individuals accused of participating in the riot will be asked to foot the bill.

The Justice Department disclosed the $1.5 million figure in a letter to a defense lawyer for Paul Allard Hodgkins, a Florida man who pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of obstructing an official proceeding.

“Your client acknowledges that the riot that occurred on January 6, 2021, caused as of May 17, 2021, approximately $1,495,326.55 damage to the United States Capitol,” stated the letter, sent on May 27 and made public on Wednesday.

Hodgkins’ plea agreement calls for him to “pay restitution to the Department of Treasury in the amount of $2,000,” according to the letter, which was first reported by the Washington Post.

More than 400 people have been arrested and charged in connection with the Capitol riots. Will they spend time in prison and will they be made to pay for the damages to the Capitol? That remains to be seen.

Those found guilty of crimes at the Capitol on that day could carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, but a judge has said the guilty parties are likely to spent 15 to 21 months in prison if that. Some may be fined for some of the damage that was caused.

The insurrection at the Capitol caused destruction of property along with injury and deaths.
