HAPPINESS
The Caped Crusader — Picture Of Bliss
November Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Happiness”
Happiness is a stolen cheese sandwich.
Black was the original colour of the Labrador retriever. They were bred originally in Newfoundland in the 1700s and used to retrieve fish that had escaped from nets.
In her younger days, the Caped Crusader would dive into any stretch of water she encountered no matter how deep, how shallow, or how muddy. She loves swimming. But as to fish, she differs from her Newfoundland ancestors. Her favourite is deep-fried in batter and stolen from anyone who turns their back for a second. But retrieve a live fish? Unlikely.
I suspect her direct ancestors hunted cheese sandwiches because that’s a skill she has in abundance. Her breed is known for being friendly, intelligent, easy to train, and good with children. She is all these things. Any time she steals a cheese sandwich from a child, she does it with great delicacy and aplomb.
However, the Caped Crusader is now an elderly lady. Black labs live on average 10–12 years. She is already pushing that average higher. She can’t go on the gruelling superhero adventures of earlier days, but then neither can I, so though there won’t be any more fording rivers or scrambling up and down cliffs, we will be out and about saving the world and spreading happiness for a good while yet.
