The Canary That Imitates The Cat

We have it recorded

What do you get a man who never wants any kind of gift? On Christmas Eve, my daughter and I came up with a surprise……. canary.

Yes, my husband was sure surprised. And delighted. He’s always loved birds.

This was all before the Red Tabby, Mario, moved in a month later.

And the pets get along swimmingly, turns out.

My husband named the canary “Gino.” We still don’t know its natal gender. That would require an ultrasound at the vet. It both sings and nests, so hard to know by observation.

The household hums along with the live version of the cat-bird cartoon antics, entertaining my husband endlessly. When you’re stuck in a wheelchair, your immediate environment becomes your entertainment.

Gino’s cage is next to the windows where he can listen to the outside birds and plea for rescue. The Red Tabby, Mario, loves to slink around Gino’s cage, pretending to forget a live bird lives a few feet above his head.

Four months in and Gino has started mimicking Mario’s meow. When it first started we thought it was a weird coincidence. Then we realized, oh, that’s definitely a meow.

The pets seem to connect through Gino’s ability to imitate Mario. And Mario leaves him alone most of the time.

We’ve all left the house to return with Mario fast asleep in a closet, far away from the canary. Couldn’t be bothered.

“Let’s get Mario an uncaged friend next time,” say the millennials.
