Summary

"The Butterfly Effect" is a poem that reflects on the interplay between fate and character, suggesting that one's actions and personality shape their destiny.

Abstract

The poem "The Butterfly Effect" delves into the philosophical concept that individual actions, symbolized by a butterfly's flight, can significantly influence life's trajectory. The author, Geetika Sethi, expresses a belief in the power of character over fate, emphasizing that who we are and what we do inevitably determines our path. The butterfly is used as a metaphor for graceful determination amidst chaos, suggesting that our character is the driving force behind the events in our lives. The poem advocates for living with humility, making amends, and approaching life with love and confidence. It also touches on the futility of expectations and the importance of moving past toxic relationships to embrace a future that is brighter than imagined. The author concludes by asserting that their fate is a reflection of their character, and that genuine interactions with others enrich their life.

I often feel, and ever more deeply I realize, that fate and character are the same conception. -Novalis

The Butterfly Effect Tickles the edge of my perception A single flap changes the course Of every life conception

I do not believe in fate Unless one’s character is attached Who we are and what we do In the universe stands unmatched

The butterfly boldly flies With each flap, she gracefully moves Deterministic chaos Her character is her groove

So as I stand before you Steadfast to remain Character, a synopsis of my actions Places perspective in a frame

I walk the earth with humility With amends made to all I harmed With confidence and my head held high With love and grace and charm

Expectations are illusions Plans for God to laugh If you feel my exclusion You were toxic in my past

All that comes before me Is better than I could dream As time adjusts to destiny Life is better than it seems

And like the beautiful butterfly My color brightly shines The future is untold But will stand the test of time

So if I meet you on some pathway And I give a cheery “Hi!” I have done my part happily It is your choice to reply

My fate is my character Honest, raw, and true And in the end, if you are my friend I am better for it, too

Thank you Geetika Sethi
