The Boys in the Band Is Out and Dated

But every young gay man should watch it

Netflix brings The Boys in the Band, the movie to a generation of young gay men who needs to understand gay history. Time has changed, but it is still not perfect. But who cares about perfection when it is in the struggle that like rocks we get polished as gems.

Netflix's adaptation of Mart Crowley’s play to a new audience will spark nostalgia for old(er) queens. We have gone a long way, set in a time when the dreaded HIV has yet to become a pandemic and a death sentence for gay men.

While AIDS is still without any known cure. It doesn’t lead to death as it was when it first hit our community and the government then wasn’t doing enough to stop the deaths.

Imagine for a second what it was like when a virus is suddenly killing gay men. A pandemic that didn’t get much attention as it wasn’t killing everyone. Even before the AIDS pandemic, gay men and women already have so much on their plate.

The Boys in the Band bring in the familiar, but, yes it is dated. It is set in New York City, at a time when there were more reasons for gay men to stay in the closet.

But who cares about perfection when it is in the struggle that like rocks we get polished as gems.

Today, it is all about diversity. It is ok to be OUT and proud. It is even ok to be non-conformist. There was a time when it wasn’t all that easy or simple. Even today, to some it is still not an easy decision to come out and that is something that must be respected. One needs to come out when he or she is ready.

Back to The Boys in the Band, as a movie, it brings you back, to a time when queens can only get support from fellow queens. There is no representation of gay culture as we see it now. There are no RuPaul and drag queens who today are part of the pop culture. There are no gay actors, queens can call their own. But there was Judy Garland, Betty Davis, and Marlene Dietrich.

In the New York Times, Clive Barnes called it “screamingly funny as well as screamingly fag” and, while warning that “camp or homosexual humor … like Jewish humor … is an acquired taste.” — Excerpt, The Boys Play On by Mark Harris

Everything needs to be learned through friends. You can’t google questions, or download apps to hook up. The encounters in the New York restrooms are where some gay men would learn and discover their sexuality like Hank. It was a time when to be gay can get you in a lot of trouble.

Imagine if you are black and gay, and it's twice the stigma, as Bernard.

The shade expressed by the queens at that time comes from a place of hurt and hate, and sometimes of self-hate. Unlike today, shade is nothing but most gay men learned from watching Ru Paul‘s Drag Race.

All the characters The Boys in the Band are still here, as our own friends. We may have a Harold, a Michael, a Cowboy Rex, a Donald, a Larry, a Bernard, an Emory, a Hank, and an Allan.

Gay men are looking for love, and the song, This Guy’s in Love With you speaks volumes about gay love.

It is in the past where we learn our lessons. The lessons should never be lost in the young generation. At a time when it may appear to be easy because the struggle never ends. It is up to the young queens to stay true to what the past queens had fought for.

But the young queens should also learn to live, to love, to read their fellow queens and throw shade. Because through all that, we become stronger as a community.
