The BLM Movement ISN’T About Down Playing The Importance Of Other Lives
Yes, all lives matter but right now, black lives just matter more, as do all the minority groups in the world
It’s funny how I seem to keep getting into arguments with people who just can’t seem to understand the significance of the BLM movement that’s been going on for a while now. The reason for these arguments? It’s because they feel that the BLM is undermining the lives of all other coloured people.
And I can’t help but feel that the reason why they feel this way is because of how privileged they’ve been all this while.
When I say privileged, I don’t mean born with a silver spoon kind of privilege (although that is one kind of privilege some of these people do have). But rather, privileged in the sense that they were born into the majority race, the race that gets a whole load of perks and advantages over others. The race where government policies favour more. The race that you see no matter which direction you face or where you go within the country.
When you have that privilege, you don’t see the struggles that others go through on an almost daily basis.

I’m not black and there aren’t many black people in my country aside from international students who come here to study. However, very rarely do they stay on to work or migrate here. Most of the time, black students would return home once they’ve graduated.
But I’m in full support of the BLM movement purely because it opens up the eyes of those who are privileged to see the plight and struggles those in the minorities are facing.
And it’s not just the black people but minority groups the world over.
The BLM movement helps people who have never known about these struggles gain more knowledge about them and hopefully, either help to fix it or at the very least, not add to it.
I was having a conversation with a friend the other day. This friend of mine is from the biggest race in my country and he was also born into a rather well to do family. Growing up, he went to private schools, had everything given to him and never had to work to survive. Very privilege chap if you ask me but thankfully, one with a good heart, though pretty shallow-minded.
We were talking about the BLM movement when he said to me how he doesn’t agree with it. That he feels the BLM movement is a way to look down on other races that aren’t black, to downplay the importance of the lives of other races. He said it was a political agenda and is being used in other countries to create political as well as racial tension.
You can imagine my shock but at the same time, I guess I wasn’t entirely surprised by his words. It’s the same with a lot of other people who just can’t seem to see the significance of such a movement.
I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it — Black Lives Matter isn’t about other lives mattering less. It isn’t that all of a sudden, only the lives of black people are important.
But it’s about finally seeing them (and other minority groups) as equal to the majorities. It’s about saying to the minorities that “your life matters just as much as mine and everyone else.” It’s about seeing those, who for the longest time, have been looked down upon, as the same as everyone else.
The same as you and me.
That they matter just as much as everyone else.

Right now, black people and people of minority groups are not being treated equally, that’s why this movement is so important. It’s about getting equal rights for them so that in the end, we can finally say that ALL lives matter, and that they all matter equally. No one life is above the other.
That’s what we’re looking for. That’s what the world should have been all those years ago. There should never have been a ‘master’ and ‘slave’ concept to begin with and it definitely shouldn’t be relevant at all right now.
So for those of you who still think that the BLM movement is a waste of time or is a political agenda, think again. Think about how privilege you’ve been that you can’t see just how important this movement is. And once you realized that at the end of the day, it will benefit yourself and the future generations to come, get behind it too. Support it. Support equality for all.
