Summary

A humorous and cautionary poem about Penelope, a black cat with a fierce personality, whose ownership brings both affection and the risk of injury due to her feisty nature.

Abstract

The poem "The Black Cat on My Lap" is a playful yet honest account of living with a cat named Penelope, who is described as having a glossy black coat, striking green eyes, and a temperament that can switch from affectionate to dangerous in an instant. The author captures the duality of Penelope's character, highlighting the beauty and elegance she possesses, while also detailing the destructive behavior and physical harm she can inflict. Despite the scratches and damaged furniture, the bond between the owner and this 'Murder Kitty' is evident, as is the playful warning to treat her well, lest she unleash her more fearsome side.

Opinions

  • The author humorously conveys that Penelope, the black cat, is both a beloved companion and a source of chaos, emphasizing the unpredictability of pet ownership.
  • There is an underlying affection for Penelope, as the author refers to her with both endearment and a tongue-in-cheek sense of danger, using phrases like "dangerous cat" and "Murder Kitty."
  • The author subtly suggests a sense of pride in the scars and upholstery damage as symbols of their unique relationship, rather than mere nuisances.
  • By inviting readers to become Medium members to support the author's medical bills (presumably from Penelope's antics), there's an implication that the experiences with the cat are part of a larger, shared narrative within the author's writings.
  • The author's request for support and subscription to their newsletter indicates a desire to continue sharing their adventures with Penelope, suggesting that these stories are a significant aspect of their life and work.

There sits on my lap the blackest black cat Her name is Penelope

If I move to the left or to the right She bites me immediately

I have on my lap a dangerous cat known to most as Penelope

She sports stunning green eyes and the sleekest physique one that would cause any madam real jealousy

I have on my lap a dangerous beast she loves me most on this earth until I don’t do her bidding and then…

I’m not kidding!

Those claws of hers wreck my world how many scars and ripped up upholsteries does one cat momma need see?

I have a black cat that sits on my lap She is queen of all she surveys the blackest black cat with glowing green eyes her name is Penelope

If you don’t treat her right if you get in a fight she will kill you! You’ll see

I have on my lap the blackest, black cat

We call her Murder Kitty Penelope for short
