The Biggest Problem With Alcohol That Harms Way Too Many People
Let’s reflect on our attitude towards alcohol
Last week I was at a party. It was fun, I met a lot of friends but I didn’t feel like drinking alcohol. In retrospect, I am proud of myself that I stayed strong and did not let myself be persuaded to drink against my will.
Things used to be different. When I was younger and lacked some self-confidence, I often let myself be persuaded to drink against my will. I didn’t want to be an outsider, didn’t want to be uncool.
For others, it seems to be enormously important that as many people as possible join in the drinking. To achieve this, they try to persuade or even push you to drink alcohol. Surely almost all of you have experienced this or have done it yourselves.
I can only guess why that is. My guess is that we know we are harming ourselves by drinking alcohol. However, when others do it as well, we don’t feel so bad.
Misery loves company
Do you really want to be responsible for others poisoning themselves?
Let’s call a spade a spade. Alcohol is a dangerous drug that can damage our bodies in many ways and make us addicted. The only thing that distinguishes it from most other drugs is that it is socially acceptable. I do not condemn anyone who drinks alcohol. Everyone can decide for themselves what to do with their body because everyone has to live with the consequences. Surely most of us have experienced unforgettable evenings that would not have been so fun without alcohol.
What I condemn, however, is forcing others to drink.
Even if a drug was no worse than alcohol, you wouldn’t push someone to inject it into their arm, right?
Don’t Push Anyone And Don’t Let Anyone Push You.
As already mentioned, it should be accepted that everyone can decide for himself whether he drinks or not.
So if you are in a situation like mine, where others expect you to drink but you don’t want to, you should remember that it is okay not to drink. It is your body and your decision.
The same thing should be considered before you are tempted to persuade someone else to drink.
