The BIGGEST Mistake New Writers Make on Medium
And you should avoid it at all costs.
Medium.com has changed the lives of writers in no small measure. People can now earn some money for doing what they love.
That’s precisely how an ideal business should be. A place where you find the opportunity to do what you love and get some money to keep up the motivation.
But most new writers are guilty of a mistake that, if they do nothing about, could jeopardize their career forever.
And it this:
Starting out primarily to make a profit.
That mindset led to a near-collapse of my career some distance into my career as a writer. Initially, writing on Medium was out of pure creativity. And I was enjoying every minute spent typing on my laptop. Until I started reading articles like “How you can make $2500 per month.”
Gradually, I started running out of ideas. And losing the fun of sharing my thoughts, lessons, and experiences with the world.
Then I learned 2 life lessons I shared in this article.
The truth is, writing on Medium is a business. And the rule of thumb to become an enormous success in business is this:
You must be more interested in the success of your clients than in your own success.
If you miss this, you may never stay long enough to reap the reward of your time and effort that you’ve invested in it.

Customers’-Needs-First Mindset is the Master Key to Business Success
People that are more interested in their success than in the success of their customers rarely succeed. Because genuine success in business is not satisfying your desires but meeting the needs of your client.
And when the success of your clients brings you happiness, then you will make meaning in life and success of your career. That’s the mindset it takes to win both as in writing and any other business.
You won’t become successful overnight, you must learn how to turn a side hustle into a profitable business.
Writing on Medium is business, and you have to work with that mindset if you must succeed. Just as in every business, customers come first. They are the people you must consider before you put pen to paper or fingers to the keyboard.
“How can I serve today?”
That’s how great people think that makes them great — in any field. And you can start thinking like them today.
Dear friend, customers’-needs-first-mindset is the master key and the secret to success in any endeavor — Medium inclusive.
That’s how you can become the reference and a go-to writer in your niche.
Conclusion
To be successful, you must be more interested in the success of your clients than in yours.
Until you are more interested in the success of your clients, you will never make a good entrepreneur.
You should wake up every morning thinking about how you should serve. Not “how do I make some money today?”
Let today be a fresh beginning for you.
