The Biggest Disasters in Google History
What the world’s information hub taught us
To err is human, Google is no exception. 251 products and counting, the Tech giant is an epitome of success. Let’s think of a day when we haven’t opened the Google tab for all that we need and silently panicking when it crashed. Not to mention the number of people who have lost their way without the map. Processing over forty thousand queries per second everyday, how could it be possible for mistakes to happen?
Racism
Before we delve into details, there’s an ever lasting impact that the platform is trying to subside — Google is lowkey racist at times. The recent encounter testifies the presence of racism even in the Artificial Intelligence industry. The AI labelled images differently for black and white people that stirred controversies.
Type anything related to people of color and you’d be amazed by the results. In 2015, there was a massive setback when Google’s algorithm identified black people as Gorillas. The company quick-fixed the problem by blocking algorithms that identified gorillas and chimpanzees.
Autonomous Cars
In 2016, Google Lexus crashed into the side of a bus in California. There have been 11 minor accidents since the inception of self-driving cars. Waymo, formerly known as Google self-driving car started as a secret project in 2009. The robot cars broke the record with 8 million autonomous miles on public roads. With relatively low consumer acceptance, Google is trying to lead the way.
Google Maps
Google map’s intention to lead 100 drivers out of a traffic jam led them to a muddy road where most of the cars were trapped.
“We take many factors into account when determining driving routes, including the size of the road and the directness of the route”
said the company with an accompanying statement that encouraged drivers to use their best judgement while on roads.
Malicious leaks
The loss of millions of IP addresses caused a panic-stricken situation which also misdirected traffic to china telecom. As a result, users were left with nothing for an hour. Although Google believes it’s not a malicious attack, sources have not confirmed the fact.
The company that started as a project by Ph.D students is looked upon as a boon throughout the world. The slow but steady growth of Google has been a topic of discussion for decades. With so much going on, mistakes and mishappenings are common.
The actuality that the information hub had something to do with life bewildered me. Slowly it started sinking in, thought pattern streamlining and my mind awakening to the boom of truth. These instances in the history of Google teaches us a valuable life-lesson — To act and not react.
If Google hadn’t done things to fix the mess, probably we would have been on another search engine right now. The company lived up to its expectations by hearing out and providing a solution.
Imagine if Google had retweeted and shared comments from leaders in the industry without taking action, nobody would have benefited. Life would be so much better if we paused to listen and act on the solution. I have witnessed numerous downfall of relationships purely because the individuals made decisions in haste. When we can give technology another chance, why not humans?
