The Big It
How We Think of God
Special Note: There is a bit of channeling involved in this article. I put my guide’s part of the conversation in a bold italics.
I had a thought this morning as I was watching “Rev” on the BritBox Amazon Prime channel. The reverend is Rev Adam Smallbone of the Church of England. I haven’t had a whole lot of exposure to religions other than Catholicism and even though the show technically is a work of fiction, still there appears to be an authenticity about it. So, I was interested to see another congregation that wound up being totally different from the ones I have encountered in my life.
The reverend in the show is played by Tom Holland. I love his eyes, but that is neither here nor there. In the show I was watching there were two congregations. Both were Church of England. The one featured in the series is a poor congregation, not well attended, but the Reverend is earnest towards his parishioners and bends over backwards to help them. The congregation, though, is very sparse without a whole lot of money at hand.
Then, in a few of the shows (I’ve only watched three of them so far), this other congregation shows up, young and full of energy. These people have a lot of money, and the reverend of that congregation has embraced technology to the extent that there are large screens above him, with cameras focused on him during the service for the benefit of parishioners in the back who can’t see what is going on at the front of the church. There is also no offering basket making the rounds. They set up digital donation opportunities.
My interest (other than the escapades everybody gets up to), is to look at how different congregations react to God. Personally, I believe in God and Jesus. But I also believe in other religions too, not just Christianity. To me we are different flowers in the garden. Still all of us in the same garden, but different.
So, I cast this thought out there, not particularly directed at anybody, just the thought that why couldn’t I who is neither an ordained minister nor a licensed psychic put a psychic spin on God? The consensus from my spirit peanut gallery in the sky is it would not spin. At all.
There is no need to put a spin on anything. You are who you are and there will always be people who are interested and others who are not. To ask for anything else is to ask for disappointment.
You’re not all that supportive of the idea.
There are many people who have a spiritual bent, such as yourself who also believe in the Big Guy.
Excuse me?
Yes, I said Big Guy.
Hey, I thought God was God and gender had nothing to do with it.
Okay, the Big It.
Did you ever write comedy?
Gilda did.
Could we have a serious conversation here? Please?
Certainly.
Remember when I was a kid and a teenager and anybody anywhere who said anything about God was considered nerdy?
Yes, we remember.
Well, I think I am again.
What?
Nerdy.
Does this upset you?
I’m trying to find an identity. An online identity where I am supportive of people whether they are spiritual or not. I also want to introduce them to the idea that they are psychic and as psychics can do wonderful things. They just have to be brave.
Why?
Why brave?
Yes.
Well, weird shit happens when you open to your own psychic self.
Why?
It’s one of those days, isn’t it? Why is because when you are new to anything especially something that might fly in the face of everything you’ve been exposed to in Church and taught was a bad thing by your family and your friends. Not to mention your place of work or where you go to school it’s going to be weird. We’re talking about people’s belief systems. They get turned around, so their sense of reality also undergoes a shift. Change isn’t always easy, and you really, really, really have to be not afraid.
Why?
Oh, come on. It’s because it’s all so new and your inner self is going, “Danger, danger! Step back. This is demonic activity. You are going to have the imps of hell all over you in a minute.” You have to be stronger than that and know that it’s scary just because it is new and different. You are not going crazy. You are not exposing yourself to Satan. You are safe. And, if you do it long enough, you’re going to learn how to meditate if you don’t already know how to do it. You will be able to strengthen your senses and discover you have senses you never even knew you had. And you’ll be able to talk to dead people like I do.
You sold me.
On what?
Sign me up. I want to learn.
This intrepid writer just heaved a sigh.
Thanks for reading.
P.S. I’m titling this story The Big It. I looked at it and it occurred to me people might, at first glance, do what I do and read something else, like The Big Zit. Who knows? People might be more interested in their beauty and what threatens it than the Big It.
The Links
Note about these shows: They are available now, in December 2023 on Amazon, though shows circulate and sometimes they are not available to watch all the time. All of these are comedies, and you could probably also find them on YouTube. I seem to remember my BritBox subscription through Amazon is $5 a month.
