Summary

"The Big Fry" is a dystopian poem by Nikolaos Skordilis that paints a grim picture of a future where Earth is ravaged by climate change, and humanity's survival is hanging by a thread at the South Pole.

Abstract

The poem "The Big Fry" by Nikolaos Skordilis is a poignant piece of dystopian poetry that depicts a world ravaged by climate change. It presents a future where the Earth's temperature has reached extremes, with the rest of the planet outside the South Pole becoming uninhabitable. The rich have attempted to escape to Mars or the moons of Jupiter, while billionaires have embarked on a possibly futile journey to an exoplanet. The poem conveys a sense of despair and hopelessness, with humanity's last stand seemingly occurring at the South Pole, the only place left with a semblance of livable conditions. The narrative is a stark commentary on the potential consequences of inaction towards climate change, and the illusions of escape for those with means.

Opinions

  • The poem suggests that climate change will lead to extreme weather conditions, making large parts of the Earth uninhabitable.
  • It reflects a bleak outlook on the future of humanity, with the South Pole as the last refuge.
  • The rich and powerful are depicted as having the means to attempt escape from the dying Earth, though not all efforts are successful.
  • There is a sense of irony and futility in the billionaires' interstellar journey, hinting that their wealth cannot save them from the consequences of environmental destruction.
  • The poem implies that the efforts to survive, such as living in domed cages on Mars or venturing into the radiation-heavy

The Big Fry

A poem about a potential future

It will be rather cool today 104 Fahrenheit tops that will be the noon peak before it later drops

Cool air from the South Pole will steal some of the heat away allow us all to take a breather until we are at the same again

It is not bad here in Antarctica during winter temps drop to 55 if only it was not dark all day but it’s only here we can survive

The rest of Earth is a waste land all other continents are frying the Arctic and Greenland are done everything’s dead there or dying

The rich do not fare much better most escaped to the rusty planet they live like rats in domed cages some took their lives from panic

The millionaires traveled farther reached the Jupiter system Ganymede, Callisto and Europa each for a $50 million ticket

Word is that many have died Jupiter’s radiation is strong most did not wear proper suits when they went out for a stroll

Finally, the billionaires of Earth all boarded a generational ship for an exoplanet with bio-gases these passengers will never reach

After a hundred generations their distant descendants will see if the $1 billion ticket was worth it or if it was a rich fool’s dream

As for all of us who were left here we will soon need to move south again to the South Pole, the last frontier it seems there we will all meet our end

A poem by Nikolaos Skordilis, inspired by the poem Melting Moments by David Rudder. This is a post-apocalyptic poem about another, quite more unlikely potential future:
