The Best Way to Optimize Your Writing Process on Medium
Learn how to write better, faster, and smarter.
Let me be clear. Writing faster is not the solution. Quality beats quantity every step of the way. However, while waiting for the prominent publication to accept or reject your story, maybe it is time to start writing on your next one.
If you have a well-defined process for writing, then writing becomes a more natural, more fun task.
“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”

Start with a layout
Writing multiple essays in university or reports at work taught me the importance of a well-structured template. Medium is not different. Look at the publisher’s formatting guidelines and look at your own stories. Find out the format which you feel is pleasing to the eyes.
Readers will engage in a good looking story. The best story ever written will not get a lot of readers if the format is not pleasing. Save the template, copy and paste it every time you want to write a new story.
Outline your story
Outline your thoughts. develop a rough list of points. Structure them from top to bottom in a way that keeps the readers engaged. The order of your thoughts should help in delivering the idea to the reader.
Delivery is key. Change the order of the points if necessary. If possible, write a short description for each point. Do not forget to do the necessary research for your story.
Write the story
After you have written down the main points and arguments of your story, writing should be easier now in the pre-formatted template. Use Grammarly or any other spell checking app along the way. Reread every paragraph. Are you happy with its content and format? Good, continue.
Edit the story
After finalizing your story, take a short break. Get a drink, change the scenery, and read your story with a new set of eyes.
Ask a person to read your draft. If they understood the point you are trying to get across, this is a sign that a random reader will understand it too.
While editing, do not forget to edit the title and subtitle of your post. Medium readers browse titles and decide based on the title, whether they want to read your story or not.
Publish the story
Choose the publication you want to share your story with their audience. Reread their guidelines. Does your story meet their requirements? The majority of stories get rejected due to minor issues with compliance with the guidelines.
What is your writing process, care to share your thoughts?
