The Best Way to be Productive: START
It’s been six months since I started down this journey toward the ultimate productivity at work. And it all started because I wanted to have more margin at home and do the important things in my life. Stress and struggle led me to look for new ways to get my work done and to be home with my family.
Since that time, I have gone from always behind to working ahead. From struggling with my work numbers, to challenging the best reps in my office. From working nights and weekends on top of my schedule to only my regular work hours.
While I have learned so much, become better at my day job, and helped many others by sharing my experience, I realized something today.
All of this happened because I did one thing: START
November 2017
Life was a struggle. I had been in my position for almost a year and I still felt completely overwhelmed by my workload and many of the tasks I had to complete on a day to day basis. My superiors were concerned about my work product too. Stress was manifesting itself in my physical health and my sleep.
Things were not good.
After having nightmares about work, I woke up at 3AM on a Saturday. This journey to productivity was starting to launch in that early morning. First, out of a desperate need for a change in my life. Secondly, because something had to be done.
The above referenced post was born. 21 productivity tips to increase your productivity and create margin. At the time, I wasn’t sure if it was completely true. These tips came from four hours of research and my writer’s mind putting them together into something I could potentially use.
However, I had a long ways to go before I would even know if it worked or not.
The Start
“The way we get started is quit talking and began doing.” — Walt Disney
It was this quote which helped me realize what I had done. Sure, I wrote a blog post about productivity tips, however, I knew I had to apply them to my life. I created a print out, which you can get too: 21 Productivity Tips Cheat Sheet. And then I hung it in my cubicle and started making it happen.
And something did happen.
Things began to change. And the original post created some buzz. People were interested in hearing more about each tip. And I was learning more and more about each tip the more I put them into practice.
The Lesson of Start
What I have learned, and what we all need to learn is that we cannot do great things or be a success without starting. It is good to get lots of information and create plans, but we must take action. Otherwise, we are only dreaming.
While I think dreaming is great, it isn’t living your dreams.
And I believe most of us want to live our dreams. We want to sit in the sunshine of our dreams and enjoy the reality of it. However, we cannot do this by merely dreaming.
We must take action.
We must start.
Are You Ready to Start?
Today is the day to commit to starting. Let’s stop dreaming and start doing. I know you can do it. And I would really encourage you to jump right in to make it happen.
In the responses below, share something you have been wanting to start doing. Have you started? Or what is keeping you from starting? If you read something you have started and someone else wants to, leave a comment to encourage them!
